I'm sure you've noticed the rise of AI in different aspects of our lives lately. From writing to resume building, and even creating a virtual significant other - weird, right? Well, I digress. It's no surprise that AI can also help with trip planning. Planning a vacation or work trip can either be exciting or overwhelming, depending on your preferences. For those solo travelers feeling lost and frustrated with the planning process, AI travel assistants might be the solution. Although you won't get the personalized touch of a human travel agent, there are many AI travel assistants ready to help you plan your next adventure, whether you're traveling alone or with others. So, let's explore the top AI travel assistants, share some stories, and see how they stack up against traditional human planning. Time to dive into the Matrix!

Hire This AI

Being a solo traveler means taking full responsibility for planning your journey. Even if you're not a solo traveler and are just reading this for fun, you know how overwhelming it can be. You have to organize your flight, road trip, accommodations, and activities all by yourself. It can be tiring and stressful, especially when all you want is to escape! I've previously discussed the new generation of human travel agents, but if you want to combine the personal touch of a human planner with the convenience of modern technology, AI travel planners are a great option. Generative AI (GenAI) is one such technology that helps travelers plan and carry out their trips.

A fascinating article in Entrepreneur profiles Generative AI's involvement in travel planning:

Let's use the example of planning a trip to a new destination. Plug in some well-chosen parameters and a few precise prompts about the travel experience you want, and GenAI will present you with dozens of exciting possibilities, whether they're cultural, culinary, historical or entertainment-based. This level of personalization is driving higher satisfaction and conversion rates among users, and it's a perfect example of a new opportunity being driven by AI.

Personalization is crucial here, and it's what makes this so fascinating. Chances are, you're already utilizing Generative AI in some capacity, particularly when it comes to creating art or photos. I've personally used Generative AI in the past to produce photos, and the results were truly impressive. You can apply the same concept to your travel plans, and many travel websites are currently using it. You can also look for AI travel planners on your preferred search engine, and you'll find plenty of options.

Reinventing The Travel Agent

It's true that there's a lot of apprehension surrounding AI, but resistance to change has always existed in some form throughout history. The real question isn't whether things will change, but how, what, and when they will change. Despite this, the travel industry seems to be well-prepared for the advancements in technology, including AI, with travel agents adapting to the evolving landscape. While smartphones have transformed travel planning, there are still people who rely on the human touch when arranging their trips.

Even now, travel agents are embracing AI, as highlighted in an insightful article by Travel Agent Central:

Most notably, Janel Carnero of Embark Beyond said she doesn’t mind it at all when clients come to her with an AI-generated itinerary. “Honestly, I lean into it,” she said. Carnero will tell the client, “OK, great. Give me what you've created because now I have some inspiration regarding what you were looking for. Oh, I see you're looking for a castle in Ireland,” etc. In a way, it helps move the conversation along, said Carnero, in that it gives her insight into what the client was picturing for their trip. In some instances, ChatGPT might not know the full extent of the options, so that gives the travel advisor a chance to shine and improve upon the concepts the client showed up with. “I think it's a great thing if [clients] come in with an itinerary,” added Mo Noubani of The Travel Box International. “We want to know, what is your baseline? What are you dealing with?” A sample itinerary gives an advisor this insight.

This indicates that either you or your travel agent has the ultimate authority and power to make decisions about your travels, and AI is just there to support you in reaching your destination. Even though AI handles the tedious, time-consuming responsibilities, it cannot substitute the unique human intellect that ensures everything runs smoothly.

The Verdict

AI is making a big impact on our lives, and whether we like it or not, it’s here to stay. There will always be questions about privacy, and those are definitely important to think about. AI travel planners can create an itinerary for you, considering things like travel time, how long you’ll be at your destination, and the activities you want to do. But keep in mind, it’s only as effective as the data we provide. Travel agents use it to speed up the process, but it should really just serve as a rough guide. The reality is, while AI can assist, it can’t fully replace human input just yet. Maybe in the future, but not today. Regardless, the human urge to explore will always outshine a machine’s ability to learn.
