DISCLAIMER: I paid for this experience on my own without any reimbursement, and my opinions are my own.
As a solo traveler, I have experienced a variety of all-suites hotels, primarily from the Residence Inn and Homewood Suites brands. These accommodations are typically quite upscale, featuring spacious studio-style rooms equipped with large king-sized beds, a fully functional kitchen complete with a dining table, a sofa that converts into a bed, and a large-screen television. I appreciate environments that resemble home, and these hotels often provide a more apartment-like atmosphere. However, they can be quite pricey. Solo travelers must seek ways to economize, yet I believe that one shouldn't have to compromise on the quality of sleep or the enjoyment of a refreshing shower to save money. During my visit to Charleston, SC, I decided to test this idea at the Home2Suites located in nearby Mount Pleasant, SC. Would a more budget-friendly version of an all-suites hotel be appealing to solo travelers?
The hotel is exactly as advertised. You get a clean, comfortable room that has the amenities of a suite. When you walk in, there’s a kitchen area with a small refrigerator, sink and dishwasher. To your right, there’s a bathroom with a shower. As you continue into the room, there’s a small living room with couch and large screen television, and finally there’s a nice king sized bed. They have an outdoor pool, and an exercise room with a Peloton exercise bike, elliptical and treadmills, along with weights. Adjacent to the exercise room is the laundry room, which comes in handy for those times you need to pack light! They do a free breakfast in the morning, mostly pre-made breakfast sandwiches and omelets, but they also have cereal, bagels, English muffins, and a waffle maker available.
My only issue was that the walls were pretty thin, so you could catch some sounds from the neighbors and below. But honestly, most people were really considerate. The room was clean and comfortable, and the price was very reasonable compared to other all-suites hotels around the area. It would have been cool to have a bar or restaurant in the hotel, but honestly, it wasn't a big deal. This place is located right near a bunch of shops, restaurants, and bars you can easily walk to, which was a nice plus.
The amenities at this hotel may not cater to the highest standards for every guest, and discussions about the pre-made breakfast sandwiches could spark some lively debates among visitors! However, it’s worth noting that the hotel successfully offers a solid range of essentials that many travelers seek from a quality accommodation, all while keeping the prices affordable. Your room rate encompasses access to a well-equipped fitness center, a swimming pool, an outdoor patio with a firepit, breakfast, and a comfortable bed. I strongly suggest this option for solo travelers.
