Honest Fast Food Reviews: Bojangles
Our honest Bojangles fast food review puts this Southern staple to the test. Find out if this beloved chain lives up to the hype or leaves you hangry.
DISCLAIMER: I paid for this experience on my own without any reimbursement, and my opinions are my own.
Recently, during a "guys weekend" trip to Atlanta for the Quaker State 400 NASCAR race (cheering for Joey Logano, of course!), my buddy and I decided to take an Uber from our hotel to the nearest Bojangles. It was my first experience at this fast-food chain, which is mainly found in the Deep South of the U.S. It goes head-to-head with more nationally recognized places like KFC, Chick-fil-A, and Popeyes. Since I don’t often get the chance to enjoy Bojangles, I figured it would be a great idea to stop there for lunch before we explored some local breweries in the Atlanta area. I wrote about food options for solo travelers, and while fast food is not the healthiest of options, it is an option nonetheless. So, is this place worth a visit?
Walking in, the staff greeted us as and welcomed us, which was a nice touch. They were very nice from the beginning to end. You’ll notice in the photo that there’s almost a closed buffet layout with warmers, it also gives you an idea of portion size and what to expect, which was interesting.
After grabbing our meals and fountain sodas, we settled down to enjoy our food. Now, the big question is whether this place is worth a visit for solo travelers. Here’s my take on it:
The biscuit was dry and quite bland in taste. I have to admit that I'm not particularly keen on any type of bread that needs butter or a sauce to enhance its flavor. It was a bit of a letdown overall.
On the other hand, the coleslaw was quite tasty, striking a nice balance in flavor that wasn't overpowering nor too mild. While it primarily featured cabbage, the overall mix was enjoyable and pleasantly satisfying.
I opted for the “Cajun” variation of the chicken sandwich, which had a nice kick to it, yet the spiciness was mild enough that it didn’t overwhelm the overall taste. Instead of being just about the heat, the spice added to the flavor, creating a delightful balance. The chicken filet wasn’t excessively large, and the breading was just right, allowing the sandwich’s components to shine rather than dominate. Served on a soft brioche bun, it featured pickles and mayonnaise alongside the succulent filet. While it’s not something I would eat every day, it definitely hit the spot for that occasion.
All in all, it’s a decent spot for a quick bite, whether it’s lunch or dinner. Despite a shaky beginning with the biscuit, the coleslaw really helped redeem the meal, especially when paired with the amazing Cajun Bo’s Chicken Sandwich. Bojangles also offers tenders and bone-in chicken that can compete with KFC, along with a variety of sides like fries, green beans, mac and cheese, mashed potatoes with gravy, and other classic options. Honestly, for fast food, I’ve definitely experienced worse.
