As other rail lines from different parts of the country connected to this line, Atlanta flourished into a bustling railroad hub. The city’s geographical position played a significant role in shaping its history. During the Civil War, Atlanta became a crucial stronghold for the Confederate South, and its aftermath saw the rise of Jim Crow laws. However, Atlanta also became the birthplace of Martin Luther King Jr. and the epicenter of the Civil Rights Movement, marking a turning point in the fight for equality. Atlanta’s contributions to the world are not limited to its historical significance. It has given us iconic brands like Delta Airlines, Coca-Cola, and the Home Depot. The city also had the honor of hosting the 1996 Olympic Games, although it faced a tragic terrorist attack during that time, which deeply affected the nation. Since then, Atlanta has experienced exponential growth and development, becoming a vibrant and thriving metropolis. This ever-growing and evolving metropolis attracts millions of tourists every year, including yours truly. Amazing Parks, College Football and Coca-Cola

Atlanta is home to numerous attractions, and way too many to mention here! I’ll give you my picks for some of the unique attractions, with some based on past experiences, for you to visit during your stay:

• Stone Mountain Park: Exploring Stone Mountain Park in Georgia is an incredible adventure for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. The park is home to the largest exposed granite monolith in the world, offering stunning views from the summit. You can choose to hike, bike, or enjoy a scenic cable car ride to the summit, where the panoramic views are nothing short of awe-inspiring. In addition to its natural splendor, the base area offers a variety of activities, including numerous trails to discover, festivals and events, a campground, and the beautiful Stone Mountain Lake. Whether you wish to unwind in nature or partake in outdoor activities, Stone Mountain Park truly has something for everyone. Located on 1000 Robert E Lee Blvd in Stone Mountain, GA. The park is open sunrise to sunset, but hours could change without notice, so check the website for ticket options, and hours. Ticket prices are generally charged in the form of a “parking pass” to explore the trails, and additional options available. There is also a sightseeing tour available for purchase.

• World of Coca Cola: The World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta is a fun and interactive experience that showcases the history and culture of one of the world’s most famous beverages. Visitors can explore exhibits that highlight the brand’s legacy, enjoy tastings of various Coca-Cola products from around the globe, and even take a peek behind the scenes at how the drink is made. It’s a great spot for both fans of the drink and those curious about its impact on pop culture. This was part of my first visits to Atlanta, and as “touristy” it is, I still loved it. The “taste it!” area is the best part, where you can sample the different types of Coca Cola sold around the world. One that always stood out to me was the “vegetable soda” that is sold mostly in Japan. Open daily from 10am-7pm, World of Coca-Cola is located at 121 Baker St NW in Atlanta, GA. Check the website for additional information on admission fees, parking and mass transit options. It is also available as part of the Atlanta CityPass.

• Centennial Olympic Park: The park honoring the legacy of the 1996 Summer Olympics. Covering 21 acres, this park serves not only as a homage to athletic excellence but also as a vibrant meeting spot for both residents and visitors. Guests can wander through meticulously landscaped gardens, marvel at the iconic Fountain of Rings, which showcases a stunning water display synchronized to music, or unwind on the spacious lawns that frequently host concerts and community gatherings. The park is conveniently located near prominent attractions such as the Georgia Aquarium and the World of Coca-Cola, making it an ideal starting point for those looking to delve into the city’s rich culture and history. The park is completely free of charge to visit and walk around.

• College Football Hall of Fame: This vibrant museum celebrates the rich history and culture of college football, showcasing the achievements of legendary players, coaches, and programs. Visitors can explore interactive exhibits that bring the excitement of the game to life, including a chance to test their skills on the field with various football-related activities. The Hall of Fame also features a stunning collection of memorabilia, from vintage jerseys to iconic trophies, providing a fascinating glimpse into the sport’s evolution over the years. Where to Stay in Atlanta

Given the vastness of metro Atlanta, my recommendation for your stay is to concentrate on the specific area you wish to explore, as the city comprises numerous neighborhoods.

• Buckhead stands out as a favored option for those in search of luxury, featuring high-end shopping, exquisite dining, and stunning residences.

• If an artistic vibe is what you seek, consider the Inman Park or Little Five Points neighborhoods, celebrated for their unique shops, lively street art, and vibrant nightlife.

• For families, Decatur offers a delightful small-town atmosphere with excellent parks, and a welcoming community.

• Midtown is ideal for those wanting proximity to cultural landmarks like the High Museum of Art and Piedmont Park, while Downtown provides convenient access to major attractions such as the Georgia Aquarium and the World of Coca-Cola.

Each neighborhood possesses its own distinct personality, so your selection will hinge on the type of experience you desire during your visit to this dynamic city. Personally, I have primarily stayed north of Midtown in suburban areas like Alpharetta, Roswell, and Woodstock, typically renting a car for these trips. These communities are conveniently located near interstate highways, facilitating easy access. Additionally, I have spent time on the south side near the airport at the Atlanta Airport Marriott, where I relied on Uber and Lyft to navigate my way around with varying levels of success.

There are countless vacation rentals available at any time through Vrbo, which is also worth considering. I recommend making a list of attractions you wish to visit, identifying their locations within the metro area, and then searching for hotels or vacation rentals nearby. This approach will help you save both money and time, allowing you to fully enjoy your trip!

From Turner Field to Truist Park

In 2017, Truist Park (formerly known as Suntrust Park) emerged as the new home of the Atlanta Braves, marking their departure from the iconic Turner Field. Turner Field holds great historical significance, having been originally built as Centennial Olympic Stadium for the 1996 Olympic Games. I was initially taken aback by the Braves’ decision to leave such a historic venue, but constructing a new ballpark is an immense undertaking that often demands substantial maintenance costs. Thus, the team opted for a more cost-effective approach by constructing a brand new stadium exclusively for the Braves. Fortunately, Turner Field still stands tall, now transformed into Center Parc Stadium, serving as a football stadium for the Georgia State Panthers college football team.

A Piece of a Larger Puzzle

Fast forward back to now, and Truist Park is one piece of a larger district. This very walkable open air area is known as The Battery Atlanta. The upper levels were adorned with apartments, while the lower levels were bustling with restaurants, bars, shops, and even co-working spaces. There’s a Coca Cola Roxy theatre, and three on-site hotels, including one attached to the ballpark! I was stunned at the development, as it really covers all bases.

As a Mets fan, Citi Field is a gorgeous ballpark that unfortunately for most of its history, stood out like a sore thumb in a dilapitated area. The surrounding area was home to “auto body shops” or as we all like to call them “chop shops”, and thankfully redevelopment into a surround district similar to The Battery Atlanta has started in the surrounding area. And in other cities, you will now see development surrounding their respective stadiums and ballparks. As for the stadium, it is absolutely gorgeous, with plenty of great views of the action wherever you are sitting.

Remember how I mentioned how one of the hotels was connected to the ballpark? There’s an Omni Hotel attached to the ballpark, with a stunning 16 stories sitting next to the field. And yes, you can rent rooms with a balcony looking out towards the ballpark…for a price! If that’s out of your price range, there’s an Aloft Atlanta at The Battery Atlanta and a Doubletree Suites by Hilton at The Battery Atlanta also situated within walking distance so if you want to see a show at the Coca Cola Roxy, or go catch a game or just need a place to stay while visiting, these are great options.

My Experience and Why You Should Visit

The combination of the ballpark and its surroundings is truly awesome to see, and the fan experience is exceptional for Braves fans. Even as a Mets fan, whether on my own or with my friend, I felt very welcome here. Maybe they felt sorry for me? Who knows. I had front row seats with the Braves dugout right near me so I had fun yelling, shall we say, certain phrases at the ballplayers! There’s tons of great amenities that you would expect at a normal major league ballpark (Fox Bros BBQ is my pick!). And as long as you’re asking, the Mets lost this game, but I still had a memorable night and an awesome time!

Based on my brief tour experience at the stadium, I strongly suggest you consider taking an official tour of Truist Park. This is particularly worthwhile if you’re in Atlanta during the winter months or when the team is away from home. What’s Old Is New Again

This park does a great job of preserving these buildings, along with a covered bridge and a lovely walking trail. It’s definitely a hidden treasure that I’m grateful to have stumbled upon.

On the banks of Vickery Creek, ruins of the Roswell Manufacturing Company Mills can be found. Constructed in 1839 and 1853, these mills were burned by Union forces on July 7, 1864. The 1853 mill was rebuilt after the Civil War and used until destroyed by fire again in 1926. These mills were known as the Roswell Manufacturing Company. The waterfall created when the creek was dammed to provide water power as well as the original machine shop can be viewed from the interpreted trail. A covered pedestrian bridge over the creek connects the walking trail that begins in Old Mill Park to the Chattahoochee River trail system. The bridge and waterfall are favorite spots for amateur and professional photographers.

My Experience at Vickery Creek Park

On a particularly warm June morning, I drove out to this park in my rental car. As I arrived, I couldn’t help but notice that the parking lot appeared rather small and sparsely filled with cars. Normally, this would make me hesitate, but surprisingly, I felt a sense of calm wash over me. Equipped with my trusty but beat up sneakers, I confidently moved forward. Stepping into the park, I was greeted by a stunning overlook that offered a picturesque view of the mills, an old covered bridge, and the gentle creek. Vickery Creek Park was once a bustling working mill situated right by the creek. It was common for mills to be located near a creek or river, as they relied on water for power. After exploring the area, I crossed the charming covered bridge and ventured onto a dirt trail. I continued to explore the park, uncertain of where my journey would lead. Climbing a set of stairs, I suddenly found myself facing the tranquil creek. I can still recall the moment I stood by the water, completely captivated by its serene beauty.

The park had more surprises in store for me as I ventured further, leading me to a magnificent waterfall area. This waterfall was truly majestic, leaving me in awe of its beauty. Alongside the waterfall, there were several overlooks where I could pause and capture stunning photographs while gradually ascending the hill. The sound of the rushing water was both powerful and mesmerizing. Moreover, it was a bustling spot reminiscent of a beach, with many families coming together to soak up the sun and enjoy a relaxing day. Undoubtedly, this is a fantastic place to hike, unwind, and take a leisurely walk or hike.

I have always been a big fan of trains. There is really something magical about stepping onto a train, and it just takes you to where you want to go. At one time, the train was the main means of transporting and goods across America (and other parts of the world), so much so that entire cities were built. Atlanta was one of those cities. In fact, Atlanta’s rich history with railroads is just one fascinating aspect of the city’s development. As you step into the Atlanta History Center, you are immediately immersed in the narrative of how these railroads shaped the crossroads of the city, and helped shape its foundation. As one of my favorite history museums, this remarkable institution serves as a vibrant reflection of the city’s historical narrative, showcasing an extensive collection of artifacts, photographs, and exhibits that chronicle significant events and figures that have shaped the region. When you walk into the center, you are greeted by its beautiful gardens, serene setting and stunning architecture of the center, which harmoniously blends modern design with traditional Southern elements. The curated galleries focus on the countless stories of resilience, innovation, and cultural diversity coming to life, offering insights into the Civil War, the civil rights movement, and the evolution of Atlanta as a bustling metropolis. Let’s walk through the Atlanta History Center in Atlanta’s northern suburban enclave of Buckhead, and see if I convince you to visit!

Gather Round at the Gatheround

I began my journey in the main “Gatherround” permanent gallery, slowly and deliberately walking through the main exhibits. The museum presents Atlanta’s history in a manner that is transparent and truthful, covering everything from the Native American tribes that inhabited northern Georgia to its role in the Civil War, segregation, the Civil Rights Movement, and even the Olympics. I have always believed in learning from your mistakes, which is what history teaches us, and this center’s portrayal of the city is no exception. The permanent gallery also showcases numerous artifacts from Atlanta’s established corporations and offers interactive exhibits in both electronic and physical forms.

The website describes the Gatherround permanent gallery as such:

This exhibition shares the stories of individuals of many different backgrounds and perspectives who helped create the Atlanta we know today through artifacts, ephemera, interactive media, recording booths, immersive experiences and dedicated spaces while setting the stage for Meet the Past museum theatre performances. It also examines how the metro area has been shaped by watershed political events and exceptional leaders while covering broad themes including Politics and Policy; Cultural Life; Family and Community; and Urban Growth.

Fair Play and Doing the Locomotion….Galleries

The Atlanta History Center boasts several galleries, both permanent and temporary. They are very creative and thoughtful about their exhibits as they can easily draw from over 100 years of history.

One of the captivating permanent exhibits is entitled Fair Play, which focuses on the life of golfer Bobby Jones. After achieving the remarkable feat of winning the Grand Slam of golf tournaments, Jones surprisingly left the sport to become a lawyer at his father’s law firm. He also played a significant role in establishing the Augusta National Golf Club and eventually the Masters Tournament.

Lastly, the Locomotion: Railroads and the Making of Atlanta gallery is truly fascinating as it showcases a fully restored locomotive train that represents the trains that were prevalent throughout Atlanta’s history.

See the House Where “Gone With The Wind” Was Written

Gone with the Wind remains a polarizing topic, both in its literary form and as a cinematic masterpiece. Written by Margaret Mitchell, the novel was published in 1936 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon, celebrated for its sweeping narrative and complex characters. However, it has also faced significant criticism for its portrayal of race and what some see as a romanticizing of the antebellum South, sparking debates about historical accuracy and the impact of its themes on contemporary society. The Margaret Mitchell House, where the author penned much of her iconic work, stands as a testament to her legacy, attracting visitors who are eager to explore the life of the woman behind the story. While some view the house as a shrine to literary achievement, others see it as a reminder of the contentious issues surrounding the book and film, making it a focal point for discussions about history, representation, and the evolution of cultural narratives.

The Margaret Mitchell House also acts as the Midtown Atlanta home of the Atlanta History Center. Visitors to the house can explore the very rooms where Mitchell penned her masterpiece, gaining insight into her creative process and the environment that inspired her writing. The house itself is a beautiful example of early 20th-century architecture, featuring a blend of classic Southern charm and modern amenities. In addition to the house tour, the site also includes a museum that showcases artifacts related to Mitchell's life and the impact of her work on American culture. The surrounding neighborhood adds to the experience, with its picturesque streets and vibrant atmosphere, making it a must-visit destination for literature enthusiasts and history buffs alike.

This is one of my top picks for history museums, mainly because the exhibits are so open and honest. After visiting, you’ll feel like you’ve gained new insights instead of being overwhelmed by propaganda. You’ll get to see both the highs and lows of Atlanta’s intricate history. I really enjoy history since it’s a way to learn; we take lessons from our past to improve the future. Whether you choose to check out the Atlanta History Center in Buckhead or the Margaret Mitchell House in Midtown, or even if you hit up both spots in one day, you’ll leave with a lot to think about.

Deep within Atlanta lies the John Lewis Freedom Parkway, where you can find the presidential library of Jimmy Carter, a president who has sparked much debate regarding his mark on American history. The Jimmy Carter Presidential Library, strategically situated in the vibrant beating heart of Atlanta, showcases the life and presidency of Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States. From humble beginnings as the son of a peanut farmer and Georgia state representative to Naval officer in the US Navy, to his run for Georgia State Senate, the governor’s mansion and the US Presidency, and his long post presidency career, you’ll learn about his prolific life. If you’re visiting Atlanta for a long weekend, you can even partake in the Farmers Market just outside of the museum! How would this presidential library stack up against some others I have explored?

From Peanut Farmer to President

Born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia, James “Jimmy” Carter grew up in a modest farming family, which instilled in him a strong work ethic and a deep sense of community. After graduating from the United States Naval Academy, he served in the Navy before returning to Georgia to manage the family peanut farm. His political career began in the Georgia State Senate, and he later served as the Governor of Georgia, where he gained a reputation for progressive reforms. Elected President of the United States in 1976, Carter's administration was mixed at best. Carter scored significant achievements in foreign policy, including the Camp David Accords, which brokered peace between Israel and Egypt, and the establishment of diplomatic relations with China. However, his presidency also faced challenges, such as the energy crisis and the Iran hostage situation, which ultimately affected his popularity, resulting in his defeat for re-election in 1980. Despite these difficulties, Carter's post-presidential years were dedicated to humanitarian efforts, earning him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 and solidifying his legacy as a leader committed to social justice and global peace. Former President Jimmy Carter passed away on December 29, 2024, managing to make it to 100 years old.

Touring the Presidential Library

Background

Since its official opening in 1986, the library has offered visitors an unparalleled opportunity to delve into the political, social, and humanitarian endeavors of one of America’s most dedicated public servants. During my visit, I found out that it also holds the distinction of being the first presidential library built under the 1955 Presidential Libraries Act, setting a precedent for future libraries. The architectural design of the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library is also noteworthy, featuring a modern structure that complements the surrounding landscape. The building is equipped with a research room for scholars and a museum that showcases interactive exhibits.

The Exhibits and a “Day in the Life” in the Oval Office

Upon entering the museum, I had the chance to view a short film that illuminated the life of Jimmy Carter. You’ll also get to understand him as an individual and discover details about his family. Following the film, you will navigate through the museum where I became increasingly fascinated and curious about his early life. How do you go from peanut farmer to President? As I explored the exhibits, I learned that Jimmy’s father also had political aspirations, albeit on a smaller scale, serving in the Georgia House of Representatives. James Carter Sr.'s tenure in office and his perspectives often contrasted with those that Jimmy Carter developed while growing up in a South still recovering from the Civil War. This upbringing laid the groundwork for his distinctive foundation, which would eventually lead him to a lengthy career in the Navy, work on the family peanut farm, and his ascent through Georgia politics, culminating in his governorship in 1971, followed by his successful bid for the US presidency in 1976. You’ll discover his achievements before, during, and after his presidency, along with the mistakes made along the way. The museum features a diverse collection of photographs, accompanied by placards that highlight significant events from his life and presidency, as well as numerous interactive exhibits.

There’s Even a Farmer’s Market

While I was visiting the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library, I spotted some signs for a farmer’s market in the parking lot. It caught me off guard a bit as you generally would not find a farmers market at a presidential library, but not really, since it fits so well with Carter’s legacy. Nestled within the serene surroundings just outside of the library, this farmers market known as the Freedom Farmers Market is a year round farmers market that showcases a diverse array of fresh produce, artisanal goods, and local crafts. Visitors can walk through the stalls, where farmers and vendors proudly display their seasonal offerings, from ripe fruits and vegetables to homemade jams and baked goods. The atmosphere is lively, filled with the sounds of friendly conversations and the enticing aromas of freshly prepared food, making it a perfect spot for families and friends to enjoy a leisurely weekend. In addition to the bountiful selection of food items, the farmer's market at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library often features live music and entertainment, and it also provides an opportunity for educational workshops and demonstrations, where patrons can learn about sustainable farming practices, cooking techniques, and the importance of supporting local agriculture. This blend of entertainment and education creates a sense of community and connection among visitors, making each visit a memorable one.

The Final Verdict

The museum has a modest admission fee, comparable to other presidential libraries I have explored. It is important to remember that you are experiencing the presidency of that era from the perspective of the respective president, which may introduce some bias. However, this museum effectively conveys who Jimmy Carter was as a person. The most captivating part of the museum, without a doubt, was the build-up to his presidency, which provided fascinating insights into his “ground game” and featured a striking replica of his Oval Office. However, as it delves into his time as president, it loses some of its allure and becomes rather mediocre. Ironically, the best part of exploring the museum is the aspects of his life outside of his presidency. The Farmers Market is a wonderful aspect to the museum, and it is nice to see it occur year round.

And if they’re a member of the NARM program, and depending on the membership level you purchase, your automatically admitted into the program. Think of it as an “annual fee” to your credit card of choice, that opens you up to exclusive benefits, but also helps the local museum at the same time.

According to NARM’s website, it is an extensive network of museums and cultural institutions across North America - including the United States, Canada and Mexico, and the network extends into Bermuda, Puerto Rico and the Cayman Islands. It’s not just museums, you can also explore botanical gardens, zoos, nature centers, planetariums and aquariums among others. NARM’s website offers the various institutions that are available to visit for FREE. There are restrictions that are specific to some institutions, so definitely consult NARM’s website before visiting. Your donation to your local museum or cultural institution in the NARM program not only opens up deeper access to you and your local museum, but it also opens up access to the NARM program, which is free admission to not only museums in your area but while you’re visiting your favorite destination as well. NARM also allows you to search by location, and you can see for yourself what is available to visit.

Other Ways to Visit Museums for FREE

While participating in the NARM program is a great benefit, there are numerous other ways to save when visiting museums, though some of these methods might be more restrictive:

• Blue Star Museums: The Blue Star Museums program offers free admission to active-duty military personnel and their families at participating museums across the United States during the summer months. This initiative aims to honor and support military service members by providing them with access to cultural and educational experiences. By collaborating with various museums, the program fosters a sense of community and appreciation for the sacrifices made by those in the armed forces, while also encouraging family bonding through shared visits to these institutions.

• Museum Passes from your Local Library: Library museum passes are a great way to explore local cultural attractions without breaking the bank. These passes often provide free or discounted entry to various museums and galleries, making it easier for families and individuals to enjoy educational experiences. By checking out a pass from your local library, you can gain access to a range of exhibits and events, all while supporting community resources. It’s a win-win for anyone looking to enrich their knowledge and have fun at the same time. This method works best with the museums in your local area or region.

• Free Admission Days and Times: The museum you want to visit may offer a special day and time to come in to visit the museum for FREE. It could be a Thursday evening, Saturday morning, etc. While this is a terrific way to explore the museum, understand that it could be very busy during this time so plan accordingly. On the flipside, this is a great opportunity to explore the museum for no charge to see if you want to return during regular hours when it’s possibly less busy.

• Use your AAA Membership: Depending on the establishment, you could get discounted admission to the museum. While it’s not free, it could be a substantial savings off regular prices

• Senior Discounts: Getting older isn’t always fun, but it does open you up to substantial discounts at museums! You will likely need to furnish an ID, but hey, you can say you were carded!

• CityPass and GOCity: Did you buy a CityPass or GOCity Pass (hopefully through me!)? If so, your pass may include admission to museums within your selected city, either as selections or an All-Inclusive Pass.

Getting a Good Deal Doesn’t Just Mean Flights and Hotels

As part of the planning and budgeting process of every trip, you should be budgeting costs in for things to do, and looking for ways to save can be challenging. However, if you love museums, botanical gardens, planetariums and even some Hall of Fames like I do, the NARM program allows you to support your favorite museum, and potentially have a say in its growth and development depending on your membership level. It also opens you up to various events, discounts and most of all, it benefits your favorite museum and it’s a great way to give back to your community. No Passport Required!

If you’re an American citizen, you can travel to any of the 50 states and territories - no passport needed. Just make sure to have your RealID on your drivers license or photo ID, and that’s it. It’s not just the “Lower 48” which already has its numerous quirks and subcultures. The United States of America includes the stunning landscapes of Alaska, with its majestic mountains and vast wilderness, and the tropical paradise of Hawaii, known for its beautiful beaches and vibrant culture. Additionally, American citizens can explore Puerto Rico, a Caribbean island rich in history and natural beauty, as well as the U.S. Virgin Islands, which offer breathtaking scenery and a unique blend of cultures. Beyond these, there are other territories such as Guam, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands, each providing distinct experiences and attractions. Even for me, who has traveled to at 35 states and counting, I have yet to explore these other states and territories and it’s definitely on my bucket list.

There’s So Much More Than The Cities

Traveling across America allows you to witness a stunning variety of landscapes, from the majestic mountains of the Rockies to the serene beaches of the Pacific Coast, and the vast plains of the Midwest to the vibrant forests of the Northeast. Much of this land has been preserved through our millions of acres of both National and State Parks. The United States is renowned for its breathtaking national parks, such as Yellowstone, Yosemite, and the Grand Canyon. Exploring these natural wonders not only showcases the country’s beauty but also promotes appreciation for conservation efforts. During America’s expansion in the late 1800s, the concept of preservation and conservation emerged with the establishment of Yellowstone National Park in 1872. Since that time, 62 additional locations across the United States have been permanently protected as National Parks. Each of these National Parks is different in its look and feel, making them all unique places to visit. If you find yourself far from any of the 63 National Parks, you are likely not too distant from a local or state park, which is also unique but on a lesser scale. Let’s Go On A Road Trip!

While Europe is known for its wonderful trains, America is known for its roads - but it also has trains as well! The millions of miles of highways, and back country roads weave, zig and zag and are filled with constantly changing topography and sometimes wonderful scenery. Stretching over 4 million miles, these roads facilitate not only the movement of goods and services but also the cultural exchange that defines the American experience. You don’t have to hit the highway either - two of the most famous roads are in America and ready for your next road trip.

The legendary Route 66, symbolizes the spirit of adventure and freedom, and extends from Chicago to Santa Monica, California - encompassing 8 states and stretching 2,400 miles! TheTravel points out among many fun facts about Route 66, including its significant role in American pop culture:

Route 66 is among the most famous road trips in the world. The road is even known by those who’ve never driven on its path! For decades, this historic route inspired works of art, including music and television.

Growing up in an Italian-American household in Connecticut, I was treated to some amazing food - not just homemade pasta, but also homemade meatballs, pizza, pastries and so much more. It formed me as a person, and made me appreciate how food can connect various cultures, and I would argue that food is the central connective tissue of America. By traveling across the country, you can immerse yourself in the local customs, cuisine, and festivals that define each area:

• In places like Atlanta, Charleston, Austin, Dallas, and Kansas City, you can find amazing barbecue that will taste differently in every one of those cities you visit.

• The spicy, bold flavors of New Orleans reflect its Creole and Cajun heritage, where dishes like gumbo and jambalaya tantalize the taste buds with a symphony of spices.

When you places like Gettysburg, Independence Hall in Philadelphia, and the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas, you will gain a deeper understanding of the nation’s history and its evolution. America is also a hub for creativity, with vibrant art scenes in cities like New York, San Francisco, and New Orleans. Traveling allows you to explore galleries, street art, and performances that reflect the country’s artistic diversity. These cities also showcase their own types of architecture, with buildings standing for a few centuries and reflecting how young our nation is compared to other parts of the world.

Closing Thoughts

Traveling across America isn’t like traveling across Europe or South America or Asia, nor should it be. It is its own unique experience. While I would still encourage you to travel around the globe, don’t skip on traveling across America as well. If you’re an American citizen, no passport is required to spend time in Florida or Hawaii and see white sand beaches with crystal clear blue water, or to visit some stunning National Parks or enjoying the incredible cultural diversity that America offers. Finally, embarking on a journey across America can lead to significant personal growth. Stepping out of your comfort zone, navigating new environments, and embracing different cultures can enhance your adaptability, resilience, and overall perspective on life.

Start Your Experience With A Cruise

The Mystic Seaport Museum is located on the eastern bank of the Thames River, providing visitors with the opportunity to embark on a river cruise to view the town of Mystic from a new perspective. Indeed, during the summer season, the museum features a variety of cruises of varying durations. On my visit, right at the museum’s opening for the day, I opted for a 30-minute narrated cruise aboard the Sabine cruise vessel, which travels up the Mystic River. This specific cruise departs every half hour starting at 10:30 am, just after the museum opens, making it ideal for those seeking a cruise experience while being pressed for time or visiting for just half a day. Additionally, they offer longer cruises in the afternoon and early evening at higher price points, alongside the museum admission fee.

For the 10:30am cruise I reserved, the vessel was quite small, accommodating only a handful of passengers, myself included. Boarding took place roughly 5 minutes prior to departure. You have the option to choose between the upper or lower deck; I happened to be one of just two passengers on the upper deck, where we were guided by a young man who was exceptionally well-informed about the seaport. He shared various interesting facts about the port and the boats docked in the harbor. The cruise operates at a leisurely pace, allowing you to stroll on the deck and snap photos if you wish. Overall, it was a truly delightful experience.

Each Building Tells a Story in this Seaport Village

This unique museum isn’t just a single structure; rather, it comprises multiple buildings that together form a preserved and repurposed seaport, recognized as a historical landmark. Each building within this seaport represents a vital piece of a grand mosaic. When you spot a vibrant flag outside any of the buildings, it indicates that a volunteer is present inside, ready to engage and answer your questions.

My first building was the Geo H Stone and Co building where a volunteer was inside, stood up as I entered, and we engaged in a short conversation about the items available in the general store, many of which date back to the 1800s. This collection featured tobacco boxes, tin lunch boxes, rapid washing machines, and a price list that illustrates the extent of inflation the U.S. Dollar has experienced over the years. Wanna know how much? $1 in the 1800’s is equivalent to $30 in 2024!

The next building that was open was the Druggers and Chemists building. Inside you will see various artifacts including various bottles of tonic, scalpels, and a drugstore on the opposite side. I was amazed at how different this drugstore looked compared to the modern drugstores we see today.

In addition, there is a schoolhouse and a church. The church caught my attention because it included audio from a sermon delivered during that period, which brings a dynamic aspect to history and enhances the overall ambiance. During my visit, the sermon focused on “intemperance.” If you turned around to look out at the street, it felt as though the sermon was taking place just behind you.

Other structures included a residence constructed in the late 1600s, with the front section built in the 1720s featuring very creaky wooden floors upstairs (and I thought my floors were noisy!). This specific house mirrored everyday life during that era. With a fire crackling, the scent of smoke wafted through the house; while it was a pleasant aroma, I wouldn’t want it all the time! The ceilings were notably low, and you could observe many artifacts from family life back then. A volunteer staff member was diligently preparing “rusks,” the forerunner to the English Muffin, just as it was made in the 1800s, complete with a pot and the fire in the hearth.

Additional structures of interest on the premises comprise a bank building featuring a granite vault and strongboxes, designed not just to deter theft but primarily to safeguard against fire, as this bank was regarded as the most fire-resistant building of its era. Also present are Mystic Press, a shop for nautical instruments, ship smith workshops, and boat houses. Among these is a small boat exhibit showcasing a variety of ‘catboats’ on display.

A place you absolutely must visit is the Mystic River Scale House. Inside this structure, you can view a meticulously crafted scale model depicting one mile of the Mystic River as it looked between the 1850s and 1870s. Personally, I found the arrangement of the houses and the dirt roads from that era particularly fascinating. This village captures the essence of life during that period. Even though Mystic has evolved into a modern town, not much has altered. In fact, many of the original homes still line the waterfront.

The village also features modern exhibition buildings that showcase contemporary exhibits. One notable exhibit is titled “entwined,” highlighting the contributions of African and Native Indigenous peoples and their cultures. Additionally, there was another exhibit on the second floor called “From Clippers to Containers,” which explored the intriguing history of cargo ships from the past to the present.

Why You Should Visit the Mystic Seaport Museum

This museum is truly one of the Crown Jewels of Connecticut and it shows. This is not just a museum, it’s truly an experience. You are transported back to a completely different time and it’s preservation is remarkable. As you walk through the seaport, make sure to stop for a moment to take in your surroundings and observe how each structure reflects the lifestyle of the people from that era. This will give you a clear understanding as you observe it all from ground level. While visiting in the winter months is certainly an option, the ideal time is after the snow has melted, from mid-Spring to early Fall. During the summer, you can also enjoy various amenities, including the many cruises available along the Mystic River. I visited during the shoulder season in early June on a weekday, and aside from a few elementary and middle school field trips, it was quite uncrowded. I highly recommend planning your visit during the shoulder seasons of late May to late June or September to early October to fully appreciate the experience.

Where to Eat in Mystic

Mystic Pizza: Not Just A Movie, It Really Exists!

If you’ve seen the movie of the same name featuring a pre-fame Julia Roberts (I have not), this iconic pizza restaurant actually does exist and still to this day. While I was in town, I felt like I had to visit to see what the fuss was about. I was prepared to order a full pie but to my delight and surprise, I could actually order slices. All you have to do is enter on the left side, and you will see some bar seating with the sign “a slice of heaven” above. This area allows you to take out and dine in. I sat at the bar, ordered a Coors Light and my slices. I went with the “pizza of the day”, which was a “spaghetti and meatball pizza”, along with a pepperoni and cheese slice (what can I say, I was hungry). The slices are actually pretty small, around 10 inches to be exact so it’s close to a “personal pan pizza” that Pizza Hut made famous.

As for the quality, it was good but my personal preference is more of the coal fired oven pizza with the char on the crust, and the crunchy but chewy crust. This was good as the slices were smaller, and priced well at $3-$4 a slice, and the crust was small and resembled more of a pan pizza but had a nice olive oil brushing which kept the crust crunchy but chewy as well. Sauce didn’t have much flavor to it though. My advice would be to go with the special pizza of the day as that was the best one. Mine was a spaghetti and meatball pizza with cooked spaghetti as part of the base with the sauce, along with fresh basil and the meatball blended with the cheese layer as the topping. That was quite good. While I’ve had better pizza, I’d stop here again, especially with the ability to buy slices as opposed to just the entire pie. Service was excellent, and fast.

Noble Smokehouse

Once upon a time, finding excellent barbecue outside the renowned barbecue cities was nearly impossible. As someone who constantly seeks out great barbecue during my travels, I discovered this gem one evening. Situated right next to the Mystic Amtrak station, it offers a delightful variety of smoked meats, ranging from zesty smoked sausage to Texas-style pulled pork, and my absolute favorite - the slow-smoked brisket. After a long day of walking, I was quite famished, so I opted for the Smokehouse Combination, which includes two meats, two sides, and cornbread. Naturally, I paired it with a superb Old Fashioned cocktail. The meats were delicious and didn’t need much sauce (which I always appreciate) - particularly the slow-smoked brisket. The sides were equally impressive. Although I couldn’t finish the entire platter, I came very close! Though it was a slow night (as you can probably see in the photo of the restaurant!), service was excellent and fast.

Walk the Mystic River Historic District

After you get some pizza at Mystic Pizza or get barbecue at Noble Smokehouse, take a walk around The Mystic River Historic District. You will see that it is home to a variety of quaint shops, art galleries, and restaurants, each contributing to the vibrant atmosphere that attracts tourists and locals alike. The scenic views of the Mystic River, coupled with the sounds of the bustling harbor, create an enchanting backdrop that invites exploration and appreciation of the area's storied past. I would have an ice cream scoop along the Mystic River at Mystic Drawbridge Ice Cream - with a little show as the drawbridge itself would go up during my visit!

Where to Stay: Hyatt Place Mystic

A truly nice, relaxed hotel situated right off Interstate 95, and between the Mystic Aquarium and the Mystic Seaport Museum is a perfect hotel for just about any traveler, whether you’re traveling with the family or friends, or visiting on your own. Rooms are spacious, with wood floors (which is something I wish more hotels would invest in), a comfortable bed, a sofa bed and mini fridge. There is a hotel bar on site that offers cocktails, beers and wines with a terrific front desk staff that doubles as bartenders. The hotel also features a fitness center and pool, and offers an extensive breakfast buffet every day that is available for free for Discoverist members and above on the World of Hyatt Rewards program, otherwise it is an additional fee for other guests. This hotel is constantly booked, and for good reason. Book your stay with my link, and I get a nice commission!

Things to Do in Mystic

Given Mystic’s shoreline location, there are numerous activities you can do while visiting. Here are my picks based on personal experience, and Google reviews:

• Mystic Aquarium: This legendary aquarium offers a unique opportunity to explore diverse aquatic life through interactive exhibits and engaging educational programs. Visitors can observe a variety of species, including beluga whales, sea lions, and vibrant tropical fish, all while learning about marine conservation efforts. The aquarium's commitment to research and education makes it a valuable resource for understanding and protecting our oceans. Located just up the road from the Mystic Seaport Museum, on 55 Coogan Blvd in Mystic, CT. Open daily, check the website for hours and admission fees.

• Fort Trumbull State Park: This charming state park is home to the historic Fort Trumbull, which dates back to the early 19th century and played a crucial role in the region's defense during various conflicts. As you wander through the park, you can explore the well-preserved fortifications, enjoy breathtaking views of the Thames River, and a fishing pier that extends out from the park's grounds The park also offers walking trails, picnic spots, and educational programs that highlight the fort's fascinating history and its strategic significance. Located at 90 Walbach Street in New London, CT, the park grounds are free to visit year round and is open sunrise to sunset. If you're interested in a deeper experience and can visit during the summer months, the Visitor Center Museum is open Wednesday-Sunday during the day between Memorial Day (late May) and Labor Day (early September), admission for the visitor center museum is available for a small fee.

• Harkness Memorial State Park: Spanning over 230 acres, this lovely state park features beautifully manicured gardens, walking trails, and stunning views of Long Island Sound, making it a perfect spot for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. Visitors can explore the picturesque 1906 mansion, Eolia, which stands as a testament to the estate’s luxurious past and offers a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the Harkness family. The park is also a haven for birdwatchers and wildlife photographers, with diverse habitats that support a variety of species. Families can enjoy picnicking on the expansive lawns, engaging in beach activities, or simply relaxing while soaking in the enchanting surroundings. Each season brings its own charm, transforming the landscape with vivid autumn colors or the delicate blooms of spring, ensuring that there is always something new to discover and appreciate. Located at 275 Great Neck Rd, Waterford, CT. Residents of Connecticut can visit free of charge with a Connecticut registered motor vehicle. Non-residents should expect a small fee, but only during the summer months from late-May to early-September. Best times to visit are from mid-Spring to mid-Fall.

• Connecticut Wine Trail: Six of the wineries on this extensive statewide wine trail are within a short drive from Mystic, all of which are renowned for its diverse selection of wines, ranging from crisp whites to robust reds, all crafted with care by passionate vintners. Visitors can embark on a scenic drive that meanders through rolling hills and charming small towns, stopping at various wineries that each boast their unique character and offerings. Many of these establishments provide guided tours, tastings, and even events that celebrate local food pairings, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the full experience of Connecticut's burgeoning wine culture.

Rolling the Dice of Offseason Travel

One of the contrasting aspects of planning for your travel is the timing. From my own experiences, I've discovered that visiting a place during its offseason can be much more rewarding than going during peak times. However, there are some downsides to traveling during the offseason. Beating Jetlag highlights both the pros and cons of offseason travel through the author's journey to Sardinia:

Unfortunately, there are few direct flights to Sardinia in low season (especially to Alghero). Look for flight options with one stopover, or combine different airports (e.g. arrive in Olbia and depart from Alghero, or vice versa). If you still can't find any flight, try my Google Flights hack. Be mindful about opening times of some national parks. Always check their website or contact the local tourist office before visiting. Some restaurants might be closed, even if they show as open on Google maps. It’s always a good idea to call before going!

Traveling during the offseason can lead to lower prices and fewer crowds, but it might also come with a decrease in service quality. The weather is an important factor to consider; for instance, visiting the Northeastern United States in winter means dealing with cold and possible snow, while a summer trip to Arizona or Florida can expose you to intense heat. Indoor activities like museums and sporting events are always an option, but outdoor activities may be limited based on the weather conditions. Additionally, you might notice fewer group activities available, although this isn't a universal rule.

Why You Should Travel During The School Year

Fun fact about yours truly: I actually went to college with the goal of becoming a social studies teacher. Unfortunately, that didn’t work out, and I ended up climbing the ladder in the insurance industry instead (and 20 years later, i’m still climbing!). My mother always said, "everything happens for a reason," and I truly believe it all turned out for the best. I have nothing against teachers, but I doubt I would have had the chance to travel as much! In fact, you might find yourself traveling more when kids are in school. With fewer families on the move, you’ll encounter less airport congestion, more available hotel rooms, and, best of all, smaller crowds at attractions. I’ve had great experiences traveling during the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas. From my experience, the best times for independent travel in the U.S. are during the fall months (September to mid-November and early to mid-December), January, and during the early Spring from late April to mid-June. Keep in mind, there are no strict rules set in stone, but traveling against the crowd usually works in your favor!

Teachers Can Make Offseason Travel Happen Too!

If you're a teacher or professor with limited travel weeks each year, you'll need to think outside the box. Typically, educators have a month or two during the summer for travel, along with vacation weeks throughout the school year. If your job has specific restrictions on when you can take time off, don’t worry—traveling doesn’t always have to happen during the off-peak season. If you have the summer available, consider booking flights for weekdays, ideally from Monday to Friday, to avoid the weekend rush. Or you can do what I often do, and book to leave on a less traffic day like a Tuesday or Thursday. If you do want to include a weekend, just be aware that it might increase your costs. During popular vacation weeks like spring break or winter holidays, you might want to steer clear of crowded beach spots in Florida and instead explore a National Park or a vibrant city. For winter or Christmas breaks, look for destinations in your area or places that are less busy, such as the upper Midwest or Northeast, where you can find great deals. Christmas is a wonderful time for family, but if you have the whole week off, consider a getaway between Christmas and New Year’s. Alternatively, why not celebrate New Year’s Eve in a new city? I did this during the COVID-19 pandemic when gathering with friends were canceled, and it was actually a fantastic experience!

Why You Should Strongly Consider Offseason Travel

The George Constanza character had some hilarious moments when he thought about doing the opposite of what was expected. Travelers who are looking for less crowds and lower prices can totally relate because going against the norm is part of the journey. Traveling in the offseason or even during shoulder seasons can lead to some unique experiences, like heading to a warm destination during the peak summer heat or exploring a cold city in winter or over the holidays, which often means spending time indoors. It could also be a great opportunity to discover a small town that doesn’t get much traffic while college kids are crowding the beaches for Spring Break. And let’s not forget the chance to visit that city you’ve always wanted to see during the holiday shopping season. Embracing the unconventional route is definitely something to celebrate!

Up, Up and Away: Taking The Ride to the New England Air Museum

The drive to the museum is a long and winding road that parallels Bradley International Airport. When you arrive, you are roughly 1,000 feet from the runways of Bradley International Airport, and if you play your cards right, you can see planes land and take off quite closely from the parking lot of the museum! The museum consists of three hangars, a civil aviation hangar, a B-29 hangar and a military hangar. When you enter the museum, you will start in the military hangar, and move to the civil aviation hangar and conclude in the B-29 hangar. As these are essentially separate buildings, there are connectors between the buildings and the connectors are all one path. The museum builds upon Connecticut and New England’s history and involvement of producing vintage balloon baskets, WWII fighters, supersonic jets and transatlantic flying boats.

Where Dreams Take Flight: Start at the Military Hangar

You will start here at the museum and the entrance features a Bell 47 Helicopter. If the helicopter looks somewhat familiar, that’s because it was popularized by the hit TV series MASH, as it was used by Army MASH units in Korea for medical evacuation. Around the helicopter, you can start in two directions, I proceeded to move to the museum on the right side first. I started with the P-47 Thunderbolt fighter. While there are planes up front, you will notice around the back that there are exhibits that highlight the plane’s significance in history. In this case, it was the plane’s involvement in the Palm Sunday Massacre in 1943 during one of the many battles of World War II. You will also see numerous stories of the pilots of these planes. If you love history and especially military history? You will love this area. Behind the planes? You will notice red coated volunteers who stand by the planes and allow museum guests of all ages to sit behind the cockpit of these planes. In this hangar, you will also see the massive engines of the planes built locally by Pratt and Whitney. I couldn’t get over how big these engines were! In fact, over 360,000 of these engines were produced locally to the extent where it provided half of the horsepower used by all American air forces in WWII.

Each plane allows museum guests to walk up to examine the cockpit of the plane or even climb in to sit in the cockpit. There are also numerous interactive touchscreens where guests can watch veteran interviews, see photos of the dedication ceremonies and watch the restoration videos under some lively music from the time. And it’s not just WWII planes. Other planes include the B-25 Armament, the AIM-7 Sparrow Air Interceptor Missile that was introduced during the Vietnam War and used extensively during the Persian Gulf War, the A-10A Thunderbolt II also used during the Persian Gulf War, the F-100 Super Sabre fighter bomber - with speeds up to 852 mph at 35,000 feet (can I hop on a flight on one of those?!). Military helicopters are also on display in this area, including the Kaman SH-2F Seasprite - still in use in various countries, but used for search and rescue missions at sea and landing on water if necessary. What stood out for me was reading about the ever evolving technologies of these planes and the need for speed and efficiency that keeps these planes moving faster and stronger.

Fly The American Way: What Does the Ovation Guitar and the K-Max Helicopter Have In Common?

Situated behind the Kaman helicopters showcased in the Military Hangar of the museum is a significant exhibit dedicated to the man and the company that carries his name. An interactive display on Charles Kaman allows visitors to view videos made by volunteers that delve into his biography and legacy, highlighting the challenges he faced that temporarily halted his piloting career and redirected him towards founding his own aircraft company. His journey is relatable to many, particularly when life throws obstacles in the way of your aspirations, and the universal urge to shift towards a new entrepreneurial path emerges. He successfully realized his dream, creating aircraft that transformed the lives of countless pilots and potentially saved many through the planes and helicopters that carry his name. This area truly inspired me as I reflected on my own challenges and broken dreams. Kaman is known for its role in shaping and innovating search and rescue helicopters evolving into the K-Max helicopters in place today, used not just by the military but also commercial customers as well - mostly involving logging, hauling, heavy duty construction and fighting forest fires.

However, the most fascinating aspect of his life to me was that he invented the Ovation guitar based on research of vibration! It turns out that he was a highly skilled guitar player in his younger years, to the extent that he received an offer to join the Tommy Dorsey Band, which he declined in favor of a career in aviation engineering. During his studies on vibration, he linked this knowledge to his passion for guitars and went on to create the Ovation round-back guitar. This design later gained fame among many rock artists, such as Glen Campbell, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Queen, and Bon Jovi.

Keep Climbing: New England Women in Aviation

In the connecting gallery, you will see an exhibit on the women of New England and their involvement as pilots. Start with the “early pioneers”, where you’ll learn about women like Ruth Law, Grace Pugh, Bernice Perry and other legends who took their passion for flight to the next level. You’ll move through the “Golden Age of Aviation” and learn about women’s impact on aviation during the heart of the Great Depression. Then, “Answering the Patriotic Call” would examine women aviators role in WWII, including the fascinating story of the WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilots), who transported aircraft for use in battles in WWII. Finally, “Blazing New Trials” and “The New Frontier” profiles female pilots in general aviation, commercial aviation, in space, and in the military. One exhibit that struck me was how MIT Professor Dava Newman led a team of engineers and developed the BioSuit, which is a compression suit that clings to the body but also includes biometric sensors that collect essential astronaut data. The form fitting suit is also designed to withstand the rigors of space but removes the bulkiness of older space suits that may restrict mobility. This shows the incredible innovations that women have made alongside men in this industry. Last but not least, there’s an interactive exhibit with a touchscreen where you can read about various women in aviation history, and their stories are truly fascinating. Women will definitely feel inspired walking through this gallery!

The connecting gallery also has a terrific and very detailed exhibit on the Kosciusko Squadron, and covers 1919-1946. It’s worth a stop to walk through and learn about their involvement in WWII.

Fly the Friendly Skies: The Civil Aviation Hangar

This particular gallery houses numerous passenger airplanes from the early days of aviation. It’s fascinating to see how small these planes are compared to the airplanes were all accustomed to today. When you first walk in the hangar, you’re greeted with the Lockheed Model 10A Electra, the same plane flown by Amelia Earhart that disappeared near Howland Island over the Pacific Ocean in 1937. You’ll also see the inside of a Pan Am Boeing 707 cockpit and numerous small and midsize passenger airplanes. Some military planes are here as well, but mostly involving blimps used to monitor for submarines in WWII. Once again, walk behind the airplanes and you’ll see a mockup of an Eastern Air Lines terminal and a US Navy Blimp exhibit that profiles how blimps and airships were vital instruments in WWI and WWII. Given my love of travel and flying on airplanes, I was struck by the Eastern Air Lines Silverliner and how it resembles what we would consider to be a regional airplane these days but also closely resembles a modern passenger airplane in particular. You’ll also see a massive four engine VS-44 Flying Boat, which helped paved the way for nonstop commercial transatlantic passenger flights, as it was one of three constructed to transport key military personnel and cargo from New York to Ireland. The interesting aspect of these planes has to do with its interior, where the passenger cabins almost resemble that of a train rather than a plane. No “seat belt sign is on” and packed in tight passenger seats here! However, I would imagine flying in those days - pilot or passenger - wasn’t anywhere near as smooth as it is now.

A Symbol of Freedom: The B-29 Hangar and the Tuskegee Airman Hangar

This hangar is just large enough to house the massive four engine Boeing B-29 superfortress bomber, in service during WWII. This particular aircraft is notable for being assembled as it was still on the drawing board through a process that has been come to realization as “concurrency” where a product is conceptualized and assembled at roughly the same time. While the B-29 was built in Wichita, KS, it would make numerous transcontinental flights to the Pacific Theater in WWII.

The other aspect of this hangar was the Tuskegee Airmen Exhibit, which explains the story of the Tuskegee Airmen from the racial attacks and segregation they dealt with to the heroic acts of WWII, their story is always one to learn from with honor and respect. It is worth walking through to see the sacrifices of these brave men, and how they risked their lives not just in battle but at home. The most fascinating aspect to me was not only how we didn’t really learn about the Tuskegee Airmen until roughly 50 years after WWII, but that the name came from a book published long after the war in 1955! You’ll see the stories from the veterans themselves through videos and a theater playing the and see numerous artifacts and uniforms. The video “The Tuskegee Airmen: Their Untold Stories” plays on a loop in the theater facing the exhibit.

Here's Why You Should Visit the New England Air Museum

The word “inspiring” is used quite frequently, but this place truly evokes that phrase. As someone who was born and raised in the Southern New England region of the Northeastern United States, I am well aware of the manufacturing history of New England, as beautiful brick buildings still stand to this day near rivers as reminders of our industrial past. Those industries have moved on, and our region embraced the manufacturing and evolution of aircraft to help shape the direction of aircraft both in the form of travel and in the form of warfare. Lots of trial and error has resulted in one of the safer forms of travel that exists today. Be Your Own Bartender at the 3rd Street Market Hall

This is an excellent illustration of a well-executed food hall. Food halls serve as an ideal choice for various travelers, as they typically feature a wider array of dining options along with entertainment and retail offerings. This particular venue boasts 19 vendors, primarily focused on food but also providing merchandise. Guests can enjoy a bourbon bar, a self-serve area for beer and wine taps, as well as spaces dedicated to arcade and video games, darts, and board games. The culinary selections are impressively diverse, ranging from seafood and sushi to tacos, Vietnamese cuisine, hot dogs, burgers, milkshakes, baked treats, and much more. The food options change all the time, so check the website for details.

In this self-serve taproom, you have the freedom to choose between small or large pours, and you can even mix and match different beers to create your perfect tasting experience. Many of these establishments also offer a selection of wine and cider, catering to a variety of preferences. During my visit in October, the menu was heavily influenced by Oktoberfest beers, which were the stars of the show at City Fountain. I decided to try a combination of a classic Oktoberfest and a remarkable barrel-aged version, and it turned out to be an exceptional choice for my lunch. While I enjoyed my meal, I walked around the city, and I highly recommend this approach if you plan to savor the delightful beers available on the wall!

Sip On Belgian Beers at Cafe Benelux

I am a huge fan of Belgian beers. In fact, it’s the only type of beer that keeps me interested in beers these days. Belgian brewers are known for their use of a wide array of malts, which create rich and complex flavors that can include notes of caramel, toffee, chocolate, and roasted elements. The distinctive Belgian yeast strains play a crucial role as well, producing a range of fruity and spicy esters and phenols during fermentation, which contribute to the unique aromas and flavors associated with these beers. Common flavor profiles feature hints of banana, clove, and even pepper or bubblegum, varying significantly across different styles. I also find the atmosphere of Belgian breweries in America to be appealing, characterized by a dark yet inviting ambiance. So, while I was walking through Milwaukee Public Market, I stumbled upon a beer bar that doubles as a restaurant, serving fantastic Belgian brews. Although there’s a rooftop area, I chose to enjoy my experience inside. I opted for a Tasting Kourier, sampling four draft beers, with plans to select my favorite for a full pour afterward.

• Theresa Tripel Blonde (Van Steenberg): The menu referred to this as a “foodie beer” but all I’ll say about it was that it was quite drinkable and definitely had some banana flavor to it.

• Kwak Blonde (Bosteels): Nice blend of coriander and banana in this one

• Delirium Tremens (Huygue): This is a big, big favorite of mine. There’s definite Apple and honey flavors mixed in and it’s delicious

• Tripel Van De Garre (Van Steenberg): Known for its three times the malt, but not much more to this. The weakest of the bunch, but still not bad. 

Ok, so three out of the four are hits...

None of them!

I decided to go with the St Bernardus ABT 12, and yes, it was delicious.

Awesome and attentive staff, and a terrific Belgian beer list and accompanying atmosphere.

Have Barbecue at Smoke Shack

I opted for the half-pound brisket accompanied by coleslaw and broccoli slaw as sides, and my experience was somewhat mixed. While I didn't find it unpleasant, it also didn't leave a lasting impression. The brisket had a pleasantly tender, buttery texture, particularly in the fatty sections, yet it lacked depth of flavor beyond the outer crust and the fat itself. On the positive side, the brisket was juicy enough to enjoy without any sauces, although the addition of sauces certainly elevated the overall taste. The coleslaw and broccoli slaw were delightful, offering a balanced flavor profile that was neither overwhelming nor bland. To complement my meal, I chose a "Smokey Old Fashioned," which featured a subtle smokiness and was otherwise a well-crafted cocktail. The attentive and friendly service from the staff, including the young bartender, added a positive touch to the evening.

Both Cafe Benelux and Smoke Shack are located within a few blocks and in short walking distance of the Milwaukee Public Market, which serves as the "gateway" to the Historic Third Ward district of Milwaukee.

Eat at the Zocalo Food Park

Sometimes, the most memorable experiences are the ones that catch you by surprise, and this was definitely one of those moments for me. Located in the historic Walkers Point district, this delightful food truck park boasts around seven diverse food trucks, along with a full-service bar and inviting picnic tables that are perfect for enjoying a meal. This venue truly captures the spirit of a food truck park, making it an ideal destination for all types of visitors, particularly those on a budget. The food offerings are impressively diverse, featuring everything from delicious burgers and fresh bagels to tempting Venezuelan and Puerto Rican dishes, as well as a truck specializing in ramen and sushi. I chose tacos (because who doesn't like tacos) and they were delicious! It was light but incredibly tasty!

Take a Tour at Great Lakes Distillery

I arrived about 30 minutes early, so I decided to kick things off with a bourbon old fashioned while I waited for the tour to begin. Our bartender and tour guide, Kaylan (I hope I spelled her name correctly!), was full of energy and had a vibrant personality, along with a colorful vocabulary that could make a sailor blush. Her storytelling about their small batch process was incredibly entertaining. The tour definitely had an R-rated feel when it came to language, but honestly, I had a fantastic time and enjoyed every moment!

After learning about their spirit-making process, we headed to the back of the distillery for some tastings. I ended up with a blended whiskey and a cool t-shirt to take home, and she even included a complimentary drink and some discounts on merchandise, which was a nice touch. You can really tell when a distillery is doing things right. She also mentioned they’re working on a scotch that should be released soon, which I was excited to hear. Overall, it was an amazing tour—not exactly kid-friendly, but hey, it’s vacation, right?

Visit a German Beer Hall at Bavarian Bierhaus

I have a strong appreciation for genuine German beer halls, and this place certainly lived up to my expectations. On a relatively quiet Friday night, I found myself seated at the bar, soaking in the warm, inviting atmosphere that is characteristic of these great German beer halls, enjoying a generous liter of the house Hefeweizen, a personal favorite of mine known for its cloudy appearance and refreshing taste. As I was enjoying the refreshing beer, I chose a hearty dinner featuring two types of sausage—Nürnberger and Oktoberfest—paired with red cabbage and spätzle, which I specifically requested as my sides. Growing up in a household that blended Italian and German culinary traditions, my father greatly influenced my love for spätzle and German cuisine in general, and this venue provided a delightful experience. However, as the evening went on and the crowd grew, the service did decline a bit, which was a minor drawback to an otherwise enjoyable night.

Why Milwaukee's Brews and Food are Essential to Milwaukee

Milwaukee's food and booze scene serves as a continuous homage to the city's rich heritage, deeply intertwined with its geographical features. The network of bridges that spans the area has historically facilitated the growth of various industries which attracted waves of immigrants, each contributing their unique cultural influences, which have become integral to the very fabric of Milwaukee's identity. German immigrants, in particular, played a pivotal role in shaping the local beer culture, establishing iconic breweries that still stand today. Get a Burger "Animal Style" at In-N-Out Burger

I know, I know, it’s fast food, but this is one of the fast food place that I make an exception for and visit when I’m traveling, as I cannot get this at home. In fact, I can’t get this at all on the East Coast, or even the South or the Midwest. It’s purely a Southwest United States chain, and it works. It’s a very simple menu - burgers, fries and shakes and they do it incredibly well. It’s also priced well too, and judging from how busy it was on a random Monday night, the word is out.

I went for my usual when I visit: The Double Double Burger with fries and a soda. The burger is always delicious as is, it’s two all beef patties, two slices of American cheese, special sauce, fresh or grilled onions, lettuce and tomato on a toasted bun. The fries are almost like potato chips, they’re not too salty and are fried in sunflower oil. The fries are cooked quickly so at times, they can be soft. They’re not horrible but not the greatest either. This place would fall under my “fast casual” definition, as the food is prepared quickly but is cooked to order. You will have to wait 5-10 minutes but it’s worth it.

However, this time, I decided to have it with a twist. I had heard about this “animal style” option that is considered a “secret menu” item. This option adds additional onions, mustard grilled patties, additional spread and pickles. When biting into it, reminded me of the Big Mac, only with a lot more flavor and a fresher tasting burger. I usually don’t go for the “secret menu” items as I find it gimmicky but I decided to go for it this time, and asked for it “animal style”. You can also do “animal style” for their fries as well, which is what many customers do. And apparently, In N Out has over 30 options for their “secret menu” (https://parade.com/food/in-n-out-secret-menu)

The burger was absolutely delicious and since I don’t get to have it very often, I’ll give them a pass on the inconsistency of the fries. The burger is just that good.

Sip on Red Wine at Coopers Hawk Winery and Restaurant

As I get older, my palette has refined and changed. On the same night I had In-N-Out, I walked over to this lovely place to have a glass or two of red wine post dinner. Staying classy! I actually had dinner here one night last year during my last work trip and the food was delicious. I had filet medallions, and I also had a glass of red wine at that time, and the flavors just balanced out perfectly. This time, I decided to stick to a red wine flight, featuring four of their house wines: pinot noir, tempranillo, Cabernet savignon and petite sirah. For me, the best one was the Tempranillo. It wasn’t even close. It had a wonderful smell (yup, I’m one of those wine drinkers!) and a smooth flavor. It was definitely medium bodied with a good balance of bitterness and sweetness. I sat at the bar, and it was a very relaxed but casual atmosphere.

Cocktails, Food and Fun at OHSO Brewery + Distillery

Located in the back of a strip mall on 15681 Hayden Rd # 112, Scottsdale, AZ 85260, you would never expect such a lively atmosphere. They brew their own beer and manufacture their own spirits. There’s also an arcade area where patrons can play to their hearts content. If you’re looking for food, they offer a “test kitchen” with various different tavern-style food as well as various cocktails and beers.

My drinks were an OHSO Mule with their house gin, which had a nice ginger and lime flavor that balanced perfectly with their gin. That was followed by the Uno Mas, a crisp, clean, fantastic Mexican Lager. It has a hint of lime and sea salt, and is infused in the flavor of the beer. I’m not a huge fan of Mexican lagers but this was really good.

For food, I went with the Stone Ground Caesar Salad with skirt steak as I was looking for something on the healthy side that evening. The salad had a good herb Caesar flavor and the skirt steak featured a generous portion of very tender and flavorful steak.

Finally, the arcade is a nice touch that adds a fun element to the establishment. It is small, and features a couple of skee-ball machines, basketball, foosball, video games and pinball machines. Tokens are low priced and can take you a long way.

Enjoy "Taco Tuesday" at Blue Agave Mexican Cantina

On our visit, it was "taco Tuesday", so of course we had to come here. On Tuesdays, they have a special where you can order a traditional taco for $2.99 each with the purchase of a drink. You don't have to buy a beer either (though I did, a Modelo Especial), you can buy a soda or iced tea to get that rate. Traditional tacos could be crispy or soft tacos, and it was filled with your choice of meat, pico de gallo, shredded cheese and sour cream. I ordered 3 soft tacos, with ground beef and shredded chicken. The ground beef was seasoned nicely and was quite tasty, the shredded chicken was good but had virtually no flavor. That being said, that was the worst of it and the tacos overall were delicious. It also doesn't hurt that they give you big bowls of freshly cooked tortilla chips and medium heat salsa, and it delivers on the value.

Get a Taste of the Islands at Tommy Bahama Restaurant, Bar & Store

I was always under the impression that was a clothing brand, and it is, but it also has a small chain of casual restaurants known as "marlin bars" mostly located in Florida, California and other warm weather states, with this location being the only location in Arizona with a restaurant. For the cocktail, I went with a cucumber smash, which was quite refreshing. For my meal, I went with the Blue Lump Crab Cakes entree, which included the crab cakes sitting on a very tasty and creamy aioli, with "island slaw" side and grilled asparagus. The crab cakes were good, with a middle of the road flavor, the island slaw mostly consisted of shredded cabbage with a light dash of vinaigrette dressing, and the asparagus was what you would expect. For the cost, it was a good value with the crab cakes being a good size, and with three on the plate, it's a good number. I would have liked more asparagus, but the slaw is a nice complement, and the entree overall was quite tasty. The atmosphere (and air temperature) definitely makes you feel like you're on an island or near a beach.

Sip Craft Beer at Pinnacle Brewing Company

Stopping in during the middle of the week at the start of the “holiday season” between Thanksgiving and Christmas, it was fairly quiet and subdued atmosphere with most of the guests hanging at the bar area enjoying some of the food from local area food trucks.

This particular craft brewery started in 2024 and is a family-run business. Our bartender was Bob, also known as “Dad”, he’s the father of the brewmaster of the facility, and he was friendly and very personable. You can tell that he is also incredibly proud of his son, and he frequently mentioned how his son is the main brewer. Bob was also very generous with the pours and would provide additional samples of the beers, including but not limited to the Mild Mild West, an English Mild that had a good, smooth, almost bread like flavor. There was also the Mexican Dark Lager, the stout, the Vienna Lager, and so much more.

The beer list is extensive and features a solid list of beers ranging from west coast IPA’s to Belgian beers, to Japanese rice lager and sours. If you love beer, there’s a great selection to choose from. They also offer ciders and wines. On my stop, I had the Seeing Dubbel, a Belgian Dubbel that was quite tasty. I also had the Vittoria, a crisp and tasty Czech Pilsner. It was so good, I bought a 4 pack to take home!

Don’t be surprised if you encounter other travelers as well, as I ended up in a nice long conversation with a British man who hailed from Michigan and was visiting the area with his family. Engaging in conversations with other travelers and locals is one of my favorite aspects of traveling.

Breakfast and Coffee at Press Coffee at Scottsdale Quarter

This is a small chain of coffee shops and cafes within the Phoenix area in Arizona. Its layout is similar to a Starbucks but with a mostly black color scheme. Its menu is relatively no frills, mostly coffees, cold brew (my drink of choice), iced tea, hot tea, but also other staples like espressos, cortados, mocha and my other personal favorite, Americano coffee. They also offer Shakers, and these generally mix their coffee with other ingredients such as peanut butter, cinnamon and chocolate (why would you EVER ruin coffee like this! But I digress...). Food menu is simple and generally consists of either Avocado toast, bagels and breakfast sandwiches.

I went for the original burrito, which took about 5 minutes to prepare and consists of scrambled eggs, cheese, diced potatoes and a chipotle sauce. They do have a kitchen there so it’s not warmed up like Starbucks does. Unfortunately, this is what I have found with most cafes and local chain cafes is that they usually do one or the other well but never both. In this case, the coffee was excellent. Just enough bitterness and flavor where it can stand on its own. However, the breakfast burrito did not have much flavor, even with the chipotle sauce. Hot sauce is provided as shown and it helps but not by much. It was fine but given the price point? It needs improvement. Service and coffee were definitely the high points. Maybe I should have had the avocado toast? Nah, i'm a guy.

Have an Italian Dinner at Tutti Santi by Nina

Italian restaurants can be hit or miss. My experiences have ranged from fantastic to underwhelming. This particular establishment has an authentic atmosphere. It's situated at the far end of a strip mall, so it may not be easily spotted. We were seated in a slightly tight space, and the chairs weren't the most comfortable, but that's where the negatives stop and the positives start. The service was outstanding, and the staff was delightful. The food was exceptional from beginning to end. We kicked off with appetizers for the table, trying fried calamari, escargot, and Carpaccio Di Bue, all of which were tasty. For my main course, I chose a side salad and the Tortellini Panna Rosa, which consists of tortellini stuffed with ground beef in a creamy tomato sauce with mushrooms, peas, leeks, and ham. It was amazing. The pasta and sauce complemented each other perfectly, and the portion size was just right. While pasta can often feel heavy, this dish was fulfilling without making you feel sluggish.

Enjoy Breakfast at Butters Pancakes & Café

This is a contemporary diner that offers a stylish twist on breakfast and lunch. There's a cozy bar area for solo diners and tables scattered around for groups of two or more. I got there just after it opened and chose a seat at the bar. The staff was friendly and attentive, allowing me ample time to decide. The aroma of the various dishes being cooked filled the air, showcasing their extensive menu. They serve all the classic breakfast staples: waffles, pancakes, toast, eggs, bacon, sausage, etc.

As you can tell from this guide, I’m a fan of eggs, bacon, and sausage. I also like to indulge in a delicious omelette from time to time. The menu had so many options! After some thought, I decided on a cold brew coffee and an 'Irish Benedict' for breakfast, which features two poached eggs, hollandaise sauce, shredded bacon, and corned beef hash on open-faced English muffins, with hash browns on the side. I’m still curious about why it’s called an 'Irish Benedict' though—maybe it’s because of the corned beef hash?

Starting with the hash browns as a side, they were prepared in a manner reminiscent of Au Gratin potatoes, which was quite a unique approach. I would have appreciated a bit more seasoning, but they served as a decent accompaniment, especially since they provide various seasonings and hot sauces, likely by design. The standout dish was undoubtedly the Irish eggs Benedict; the eggs were delicious and cooked to perfection, with the yolk and sauce harmonizing beautifully with the hash, crispy bacon bits, and English muffins. Speaking of bacon, it was real bacon, finely chopped. The cold brew coffee was okay, though it leaned towards the bitter side.

Service was excellent, as mentioned. The restaurant was clean and comfortable, and the food is terrific. It's definitely worth a stop if you're in the area!

Enjoy Saki and Soju at Pocha 54 Korean Tapas

Located in the High Street AZ District, which features offices, shops, and restaurants on the northern side of Scottsdale, this charming Asian tapas bar offers a selection of beer, wine, and liquor, as well as saki and soju, along with various other Asian beverages. Until this visit, I had never experienced Saki or Soju, and I felt it was the perfect opportunity to give both a try!

I began with a soju, took a sip, and found myself quite intrigued. The bartender offered me a tasting of the yogurt-flavored soju, which was both refreshing and had a subtle yogurt flavor. Additionally, the prices were reasonable, around $13 per bottle! Following that, I opted for the Takara Mio Sparkling Sake, which proved to be a delightful and refreshing adult beverage. While I acknowledge that these drinks may not be entirely 'authentic' to Japanese and Korean traditions, I wonder what harm it does if they spark interest in these beverages? If anything, it encourages me to explore more! The bartenders, a couple of young women, engaged me in a conversation that spanned various topics, including recent films and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They were wonderful to chat with, and I genuinely enjoyed our discussion. They also made me feel at ease as I was trying these drinks for the first time.

Get Your Speakeasy Fix at Pigtails Speakeasy

I have a great fondness for speakeasies, as they provide an enjoyable way to savor cocktails, beer, and wine in a manner that feels somewhat historical. Today's speakeasies are significantly more accessible than those of the past, eliminating the risk of police raids, yet they remain incredibly entertaining, with drink menus that often pay homage to that era. Nestled behind The Whining Pig Brewery in a rather inconspicuous outdoor mall called The District, this speakeasy bar offers fantastic drinks and exceptional service. Who would have thought that an outdoor mall could feature not only the typical shops but also a brewery and a speakeasy?

As my coworker and I walked in, we could smell the smoke in the air, which was intriguing. What could it be? Oh it could be the amazing smoked old fashioned! It’s a bit of a wait, but very worth it! And the presentation is top notch as shown below:

They also offer smoked tequila, and the smoking technique used in cocktails distinctly differentiates it from the typical cocktail you might enjoy. It's essential to recognize the effort these bartenders invest in crafting these beverages, as well as the 'show' they put on to bring these drinks to life. It's truly a remarkable experience.

Sip on World Class Scotch at The Scotch Library

Scotch whiskey is truly an acquired taste. My journey with it began at my friend's wedding in Seattle in 2017, where I first sampled Johnny Walker Red Label, the most basic scotch available. That initial experience sparked my appreciation for Scotch whiskey. Today, it stands as my favorite spirit, with Kentucky Bourbon as a close runner-up. I was excited to discover this fantastic place while returning to the hotel.

Located within the Westin Kierland Resort & Spa, this library features an impressive collection of over 300 scotch whiskeys, ranging from well-known brands to rare single malts aged over 40 years. Guests are guided by 'Scotch Library Ambassadors,' who act as sommeliers for scotch. Our ambassador, a wonderful young woman named Theresa, made us feel completely at ease. I also learned that adding a splash of water to scotch through a water dropper can enhance its flavors and aromas, which is ideal for those who prefer it neat or at room temperature. Personally, I enjoy my scotch with a few small ice cubes or a large cocktail ice cube through a cocktail ice cube mold. But don’t just take my word for it; even Smithsonian Magazine references a scientific study that supports this idea:

True whiskey experts have been telling fellow imbibers for years: add a bit of water to your whiskey. The claim is that by adding a touch of water flavors open, improving the taste. Now as Jenna Gallegos reports for The Washington Post, a new study in the journal Scientific Reports gives a thumbs up to the practice and uses science to show why a bit of H2O is good for the brown stuff.

As for this amazing Scotch Library, walk-ins are welcome but reservations are encouraged. Every Friday night, they offer 'An Evening With Scotches,' allowing you to sample three different scotches for $65 per person. You'll learn about the distinct characteristics of various Scottish whiskies and receive tips on how to savor scotch to its fullest. Whether you're a novice, or an expert, you will feel welcome and you will enjoy your time here. And like visiting your local public library, you may learn something new!

Where to Stay: The AC Hotel by Marriott Scottsdale

I've visited this hotel several times, and it's truly delightful. Located next to the Westin Kierland Resort & Spa, it serves as an excellent venue for both business and leisure. It's quite sought after, which makes it a bit on the expensive side, but it's definitely worth it. The fitness center is large, featuring numerous machines and weights, along with plenty of space for yoga and stretching. There's a heated outdoor pool, a comfortable seating area, and a firepit. The hotel bar is exceptional, serving delicious appetizers, small plates, and a wide selection of beverages including cocktails, beer, wine, and spirits. The rooms are extremely comfortable, furnished with a minifridge, a sofa bed, and a very cozy bed. After enjoying the dining options from this guide and perhaps exploring Scottsdale a little, it's a wonderful place to come back to. Just a note, breakfast isn't included in the rate unless you choose a higher-priced option, but there are many nearby places as mentioned in this guide within walking distance or a short drive.

In Memoriam: The Buzz Eatery and Treats (Permanently Closed)

The Buzz Eatery and Treats has sadly shut its doors. Although I feel disappointed by its closure, I can’t say I’m surprised. During my many visits to the cafe, I often noticed a lack of customers, and the staff were not particularly friendly. Situated in a shopping center with very little foot traffic in the mornings, it appeared that the signs of trouble had been evident for some time. Nevertheless, I wish them the best in regrouping and reopening, as their breakfast sandwich was exceptional. Here’s my review from when the article was originally published:

I’m very basic when it comes to breakfast. Give me bacon and eggs or sausage and eggs and I’m a happy man. I love a good breakfast sandwich, and especially one that keeps you full.

After standing and staring at the menu for a few minutes, I settled on the Breakfast Sandwich, which is 3 scrambled eggs, thick cut bacon, mayo (marketed as “Abby’s Mayo”) and white American cheese on focaccia bread. It was so good, I came back a morning later for the croissant version!

I ordered the breakfast sandwich and it was excellent. The mayo blended in perfect with the melty white American cheese. The eggs were folded so that worked and the foccacia bread was actually soft, which was surprising (and gives my teeth a break too). Finally, this is real thick cut bacon. I think it’s slab bacon? But it was absolutely delicious. After you’re given a placard, you wait for 3-5 minutes as it’s freshly prepared for you. You are also served some orange slices, which is a nice touch and a great side to balance out the eggs and bacon, and the cold brew was great coffee. Again, I’m pretty basic but it’s an excellent stop. They also offer avocado toast, fruit bowls and tons of other breakfast items, in addition to lunch items available later in the day. If breakfast is any indication, I would think the rest of their food is excellent as well.

When you travel, it's a good idea to limit yourself to a maximum of three pairs of shoes to make the most of the space in your luggage, especially if you're taking a carry-on. Or you might wear loafers for the flight and pack dress shoes and running shoes in your luggage? I also carry a backpack that features a “shoe compartment” at the bottom; I don’t really need or use it, but it’s reassuring to know it’s available if necessary. By being thoughtful about your shoe selections, you can keep your bag organized while still being ready for different events during your journey. • Roll and Fold: Roll up synthetic clothing, while cotton items should be folded.

• Wear your bulkiest clothing while traveling: If you have a heavy coat or boots, wear them on the plane to save precious luggage space for other necessities.

• Travel Size Works Best: Instead of bringing full-sized bottles, consider transferring your favorite products into smaller containers or buying travel-sized versions to conserve space and weight.

• One Last Thing: Before you close your suitcase, take a moment to review your packing list and remove any non-essential items, concentrating on the essentials to leave some space for souvenirs or anything you plan to bring back home.

The Breweries!

Casual Animal Brewing

Relaxed and casual brewery serving mostly pilsners and IPA’s. Beer menu is not extensive but the pours are good and they do the job. In our visit, I started with the Mane Event, which was a Pilsner that had a crisp refreshing taste. The next one was a “west coast Pilsner” known as Packworthy, which had a very light IPA taste to it but also a bit of an aftertaste. The brewery is beautifully designed with art adorning the walls and plants all over the ceiling and interior, creating a very inviting space.

Border Brewing Co

Adorned with reclaimed wood both as lighting and the bar itself, this brewery features both beers and non alcoholic beers, a limited menu of cocktails and wine. Most of the beer on the menu features lagers, pilsners and IPA’s. I stuck with a Backyard Lager as my lone beer. We engaged in a conversation with the bartender where we discussed different spots of New England, and she relayed to us some recommended stops for barbecue, things to do and breweries in town.

Strawberry Hill Brewing Company

A very small brewery with only a few kegs,  Strawberry Hill is situated next to Slaps BBQ (see review below) and is a great “overflow” spot for anyone who orders ahead at Slaps and brings it over for a beer at Strawberry Hill and some delicious BBQ. But if you just want the beer, this place has some terrific brews. When we stopped in, I had a Bramber Ale, which is a darker ale with a light caramel and chocolate flavor that didn’t overwhelm and had that easy drinking feel of an ale. My next beer would be the Long Road Ahead, an oatmeal stout that had the taste and feel of a Guinness beer. Great place that is worth a visit whether you’re having Slaps BBQ next door or not.

Strange Days Brewing

Located adjacent to a virtual reality taproom, it’s a terrific place to enjoy some Premier League games on a Saturday with some terrific beers. Beers on tap are mostly European in nature, so expect Czech dark lager, Italian Pilsner and a New Zealand Lite Lager, but there’s also IPA’s, brown ale, sour ale, etc. I started with an Italian Pilsner called “Mi Scuzi”, which was a good balance of crisp and refreshing with a clean taste. My next beer would be a Noisey Light, which was the New Zealand Lite Lager, which also had a crisp refreshing taste. Garage-style brewery that has the atmosphere of, you guessed it, drinking beers with your friends in their garage.

River Bluff Brewing

Located near City Market, within the North Kansas City district, this terrific spot houses numerous and different kinds of beers from IPA’s to cream ale to unfiltered lagers, and my personal favorite - Belgian strong ale. Speaking of my personal favorite, I had the Sandy Dunes, which was a tasty Belgian Strong Ale. Later, I would switch to a Goldlion, which was a “golden stout”, which had the taste of a stout but the look of a Bud Light. They also serve food at this location as well.

Boulevard Brewing

This is one of the more well known breweries in Kansas City. They have an extensive beer menu and are well distributed across the United States. When you arrive, you can do tours and/or just grab a beer at the bar upstairs. It is designed to look like a beer hall. As for beer, I went with Bob’s 47 Oktoberfest, as our visit coincided with the fall months. After that one, I had a flight of the higher ABV beers, including Nitro Three Philosophers (in collaboration with the terrific Ommegang Brewery - click here to scroll down to read my review), Bourbon Barrel Quad, Rye on Rye and the “Proper Pour”. Of all the beers I sampled? I enjoyed the Bourbon Barrel Quad the most as it had a rich flavor. The Nitro Three Philosophers added a creamy taste to an already terrific beer. Boulevard also offers tours of the brewery if you're so inclined!

Vine Street Brewery

Advertised as a “black owned brewery”, this particular brewery is quite colorful with numerous beers on tap. One of the aspects of breweries I enjoy is how different each one is in terms of its atmosphere and this is no different, right down to the walls and the “graffiti”. As for the beer, they did a terrific job. Numerous beers are on tap ranging from IPA’s to lagers to cream ale. I went with the East 71, which was a cream ale to start, and finally, the Hood Saison, which had a full rich flavor without making you feel overpowered.

Cinder Block Brewery

Situated in an industrial area in North Kansas City (which is actually separate from Kansas City), this spot offers an eceletic menu of beers ranging from IPA’s to seasonal pours. One beer I tried was a “pumpkin cream ale” which blended the cream ale flavor with just the right amount of pumpkin flavor. My next and final beer was a Doppleblock, which resembles a darker beer but has plenty of flavor. Both beers were quite tasty and shows the creativity of this establishment.

Brewery Emperial

Lovely outdoor/indoor space featuring picnic tables on the outside, and plenty of seating inside. Food options are a blend of German food and beer, complete with steins! Cornhole boards can be seen outside, and there’s plenty of vintage signs and even a vintage telephone booth. Their ordering system utilizes a menu that you use your phone to pull up the menu and you can order direct from this menu, both food and beer. Servers will bring the beer and food out to you. As for food, I went with a BLT and fries, you can’t go wrong there. And this one was excellent - fresh lettuce, garden fresh tomatoes, and tasty bacon on toasted buttered bread. As simple of a sandwich as this is, fresh just tastes better and makes all the difference. As for beer, I had a pilsner in a stein and it was terrific.

The Barbecue!

Woodyard Bar-B-Que

When we arrived at this barbecue restaurant, the sign outside has this big display that they were featured on numerous food shows, which can sometimes be a bad sign. I ordered a three meat patter with one side, featuring three of their meats. I chose brisket, turkey and sausage. While the meal was filling, it was a little underwhelming. It was mostly deli sliced barbecued meat, starting with turkey and then the brisket which almost resembled roast beef. These would be nice on a sandwich perhaps but I’m not sure how this qualifies as barbecue? Sauces were tasty, and while the meat was good, I guess I expected a better experience. This is another example of a restaurant being featured on food shows that almost become a victim of their own success.

Slaps BBQ

This was one of the recommended stops as we chatted with locals at the hotel and the various breweries we visited on the first night, and consistently, this was top of the list. When we arrived, the line went outside the door and we waited over 45 minutes and that’s usually a good sign for any barbecue establishment. As we waited in line, we all grabbed a beer at the entrance and headed in as the line continued to move. There were many options including meat by the pound, platters, sandwiches and sides. The menu is extensive enough and allows you to customize as well. As I was interested in the meat only, I decided to make my own meat platter and went with 1/4 pound of burnt ends, brisket and smoked turkey respectively. No sides, just give me the meat! Though I did get bread, pickles and jalapeño peppers to top things off. As for sauces, only two are available: Spicy and Sweet, both have a sweet backbone, sweet tastes very sweet and the spicy sauce has a honey backbone with a decent amount of heat. It’s that perfect blend of spicy and sweet. But you won’t need it. The meat is melt in your mouth good, especially the smoked turkey which was moist and tender, with just the right amount of seasoning. The burnt ends had a good blend of bark and fat, and the brisket was moist and delicious. It’s worth the wait to wait in line and you can sit down and eat at the picnic tables on the enclosed patio. But if you don’t have time or would rather eat at a local brewery, they have order ahead service available as well so you can order ahead, pick up your order and take it with you to your next stop. In any event, you can’t go wrong. This is excellent barbecue, and without a doubt a "top 5" experience for me when it comes to Barbecue.

It's Not Just Breweries and Barbecue in Kansas City

I firmly believe in engaging with the locals in every city and place I explore, as they possess a deeper understanding of the area than anyone else, and generally, they won't lead you astray. Through countless discussions with those who serve the amazing barbecue and beers, I've sensed a genuine pride in the city and its offerings. I’ll always remember one of my first solo trips was to Boston. It was pretty close to home and a great way to see if I could handle traveling alone. Everyone travels for a reason, and I'm a history buff, especially American history. So, what better way to dive into a city and its past than to start with one that’s practically in my backyard? Whenever I go to a new city, I like to really get to know it. I want to learn about its history, its background, and all the little details, including the flaws that make it unique. I decided to approach this trip like a first-time tourist would. After hopping off the T Subway at the New England Aquarium in Boston, I spotted a sign for a "hop on hop off" trolley tour, and I was curious. These tours follow a set route through the city, driven by a local guide who shares insights about the area while taking you to various landmarks and museums. When I visited Boston, my trolley tour featured an older guy with that unmistakable Boston accent who spoke about the different neighborhoods as we moved from stop to stop. One aspect that stood out for me was when the tour guide mentioned how the North End used to be a dilapidated area, but thanks to the "Big Dig" construction in the early 2000s, it’s been revitalized. It’s not just about making stops; it’s about understanding why those stops matter to the city’s history and foundation. Although I’ve been to Newport, Rhode Island many times, I was thrilled to discover that they now offer their own city tour. While it’s not exactly a "hop on hop off" tour, it gives tourists (and sometimes locals) a chance to learn more about the city they’re visiting. Bundling: It's Not Just for Insurance - It Can Be For Your Tour!

This tour was a package I purchased that included admission to the Marble House Mansion. The entire tour lasts for 3 hours, beginning with a 90-minute exploration of Newport. The route takes you through downtown Newport, its waterfront, neighborhoods, Ocean Drive, and the stunning mansions. At the mansions, the tour will stop at Marble House and the Breakers Newport (depending on the package you choose), after which you'll have an hour to enjoy a self-guided tour of the mansion. Be sure to set an alarm since you'll be on a schedule. The tour driver will inform you when he will return to pick you up. Once that time comes, you'll be collected and taken to the next destination. In my experience, we proceeded to the Breakers, where the passengers from that tour were gathered. After that, it’s a 30-minute ride back to the starting point.

What Can You Experience on a Newport Trolley Tour?

On this scorching day as I write this, we embark on a journey aboard what seems to be a relatively new air-conditioned bus designed to resemble a trolley, with very comfortable seating. Our tour guide, an 82-year-old retired Vietnam veteran, proudly shared his experiences of traveling to all 50 states and Europe, a goal I also aspire to achieve! The tour driver was both charismatic and charming, engaging well with the passengers. The tour kicks off with the history of Newport, which dates back to 1639 when it was established by a group of affluent colonists as a port city, complete with numerous rum distilleries at that time. You will traverse through Newport's neighborhoods, discovering what once existed and what has endured over the years. Colonists sought a place to gather and enjoy a drink or two (or ten), and the White Horse Tavern fulfilled that need as the oldest continuously operating tavern in America. Newport also boasts the largest collection of colonial homes outside of Gettysburg, which you will witness as you pass through the neighborhoods. The tour bus glides along the charming cobblestone street of Thames St, lined with various shops, pubs, and restaurants. Even in the late morning of this early summer Thursday, the area was bustling. You will also catch a glimpse of Americas Cup Ave as it transitions into Memorial Blvd. As the tour bus navigates through town, the driver will share his dining recommendations, many of which are Irish pubs. One particular place was O’Brien’s Pub, where he joked that you could enjoy a 6-course meal for just $12, featuring a baked potato and a six-pack of beer!

The tour goes on through Newport, venturing into the quieter parts of the town. We strolled past the charming Newport Harbor and the Ida Lewis Yacht Club, named in honor of the famous diver. If you're a fan of celebrity homes, Newport has plenty to offer, as both Judge Judy Sheindlin and Jay Leno own residences and cottages here. The tour also includes a visit to Fort Adams State Park and the Eisenhower House, both of which provide stunning views of Narragansett Bay and the Claiborne Pell Bridge. During my tour, we made a stop at the overlook, allowing us a few moments to step off the bus and stretch our legs while soaking in the scenery. You’ll also navigate through the peaceful back streets of the lower area, which features the Newport Country Club, a golf course situated right along the bay.

The route continues onto Ocean Drive, which is a 10 mile road with million dollar homes right along the bay and Breton Point State Park on that same road. If you visit in the summer months, see if you can have the windows open as you will smell the salt and seaweed of the adjacent ocean. As you pass through the edge of Breton Point State Park, you will see the Portuguese Discovery Monument which honors the Portuguese navigators of the Golden Age of maritime exploration spanning from the early 1400’s to the late 1500’s. It should be noted that Rhode Island and this portion of Southern New England is home to a thriving Portuguese community, and is evident in its food and neighborhoods. You will then approach the Cliff Walk, which is the crown jewel of Newport, accessible to everyone, it’s a place of absolute scenic beauty and it's a must-visit when visiting Newport.

As you move back into town, you will pass by the mansions of Newport including Rough Point, The Belcourt, the Miramar, and the Marble House. This portion for us on the tour would be our stop. The tour would pick up after my tour of the Marble House. For the rest of the passengers, you will continue back to the base. You’ll see Rosecliff and The Breakers Newport - which is the largest attraction in the state of Rhode Island. The tour in its entirety for me ran for 3 hours, this includes an hour at Marble House, along with the stops at the Breakers. If you book a tour with the Breakers, you will be the next stop after the pickup at Marble House.

The Intrinsic Value of City Tours

I have visited Newport several times, and I loved taking this tour as I learn something new every time, and this tour is no exception. I strongly believe that tours, guided by locals who know the town and can recommend places to visit and places to eat and drink are the best options for any kind of traveler. These tours are incredibly popular for good reason, as it connects all types of travelers into a shared experience - including solo travelers, and those traveling with friends and family. It also allows you the freedom to either stay on the entire ride and learn about the city from the local tour guide, or it allows you to connect to various stops on the journey. Budget travelers should not balk at the price point of these tours, but understand the immense intrinsic value in having a local guide you through this town, and tell you where to go and where to avoid. I highly value guides who do not direct me to tourist hotspots, I would prefer to be directed to areas that value tourism, but isn't overwhelmed by it either. This tour does that, and I learned about a less traveled part of Newport known as Ocean Drive, which features gorgeous mansions, an unvarnished beach front with beautiful views, and a couple of state parks in that area. I distinctly remember as I was documenting this experience to make a mental note when I have more time to experience to return to visit those parks again. That is what these tours offer, the ability to see beyond the tourist hotspots and enhance your experience when visiting a city. It's why I constantly recommend everyone traveling to take a day and let someone else do the driving while you sit, listen and learn.

Things to Do In and Near Newport

While Newport may be seen as a seasonal summer destination, there is plenty to do year round. However, you will get the most out of your visit when visiting in the late Spring and early Fall "shoulder" seasons, as prices are slightly lower and it is less crowded. Here are some recommended stops when visiting this charming coastal city in Southern New England:

• The Cliff Walk: This scenic route meanders past some of the most opulent mansions of the Gilded Age, allowing walkers to glimpse the grandeur of these architectural marvels while being enveloped by the refreshing ocean breeze and the sound of waves crashing against the rocks below. As you traverse the path, you’ll encounter picturesque views of the Atlantic Ocean, with its shimmering waters and dramatic cliffs, making it a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. The walk is not only a feast for the eyes but also an opportunity to immerse oneself in the rich history of Newport, as informative plaques along the way provide insights into the area’s cultural heritage. And it's completely FREE to visit and walk! Parking can be a little difficult as you can park around the entrance on the road, but it is first come first serve, and there is a parking fee. Discover Newport has a terrific map feature that shows you entrance points for the Cliff Walk, so you can choose which spot works best for you.

• Ocean Drive and the State Parks: This relaxed, serene area of Newport is home to some incredibly expensive real estate, scenic views and two amazing state parks. Fort Adams State Park is a former U.S. Army fort and was turned into a state park for Rhode Island in 1965, and you can engage in guided and self-guided tours of the fort from late-Spring to early-Fall, with self-guided tours starting at $16 for adults, and guided tours starting at $24 for adults, and discounts available for seniors, military members, college students and youths. You're also free to tour the surrounding state park on your own for free and it includes access to paths for walking, running and bicycling, as well as picnicking and fishing.

• International Tennis Hall of Fame: Established in 1954, this Hall of Fame not only celebrates the achievements of legendary athletes but also preserves the rich history of tennis through an extensive collection of artifacts, memorabilia, and interactive exhibits. Visitors can explore the beautifully landscaped grounds, which include the iconic grass courts where the Hall of Fame Championships are held annually, and delve into the stories of tennis greats like Billie Jean King, Rod Laver, and Arthur Ashe. The museum offers a unique blend of education and entertainment, featuring engaging displays that highlight the evolution of the game, its cultural impact, and the personal journeys of its inductees. Where to Eat and Drink Near Newport

• Taproot Brewery & Newport Vineyards: It's two establishments in one place! Newport Vineyards is renowned for its exquisite selection of locally produced wines, crafted from grapes grown on-site. Visitors can embark on guided tours of the vineyard, where they can learn about the winemaking process, sample a variety of wines, and enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. Just a stone's throw away, Taproot Brewery complements this experience with its artisanal craft beers, brewed with a focus on sustainability and local ingredients. The brewery's inviting taproom provides a cozy atmosphere for patrons to savor unique brews, ranging from hoppy IPAs to rich stouts. I love Belgian beers and they will often have at least one on tap at any given time. It is worth a visit for the great wine and beer, and they have a diverse menu of food available as well. • Anthony’s Seafood: This stop resembles a dive bar in both appearance and atmosphere, yet it serves as both a restaurant and a seafood market. You can buy fresh seafood, and they also prepare it for you in various dishes. The ordering system is distinctive, almost akin to a fast-casual venue where you park, walk up to the entrance, and encounter several signs detailing the process. A menu is displayed outside the door, allowing customers to see the available options. Upon entering, you are greeted by a large seafood tank, but if you veer to the right, you can choose between the dine-in or take-out lines. I opted for the dine-in line, where bottled drinks are available for purchase. Alcohol is also for sale, but it is kept behind the counter. You place your order, receive a number, and are given a tray with utensils in a bag along with napkins, then you find a seat. DO NOT attempt to claim seats in advance! There are plenty of excellent seats to choose from. I placed my order and waited around 10 minutes. I ordered grilled salmon tacos and fries, and it was quite delicious! However, if you're interested in other options, they also serve lobster rolls (both hot and cold), fish tacos, and various seafood dishes, as well as burgers and fries, plus non-seafood choices. This establishment is located about 15 minutes from downtown Newport on 963 Aquidneck Ave in neighboring Middletown, RI, and is usually open Thursday-Tuesdays, closed Wednesdays. Where to Stay when visiting Newport

When planning a trip to Newport, Rhode Island, choosing the right place to stay can significantly enhance your experience. The city offers a variety of accommodations that cater to different tastes and budgets. For a luxurious experience, consider booking a room at one of the historic mansions turned hotels, such as The Chanler at Cliff Walk, where you can enjoy stunning ocean views and elegant decor. If you prefer a more laid-back experience, there are charming bed-and-breakfasts scattered throughout the city, like the Inn at Castle Hill, which provides a cozy atmosphere and personalized service. There are also numerous vacation rentals through Vrbo available within the area. Finally, for those traveling with family or on a budget, there are also several well-rated hotels and motels that offer comfortable amenities within the area. There is something about a mansion that draws the average person to want to see it. Mansions show us the lifestyle we all aspire to live, even if we don't want to live in one. I personally would love a small house with a mountain view, a sweet firepit and deck in the back, but that's just me. Some find mansions to be a monstrosity, but I have always found mansions fascinating. Many mansions are equipped with numerous rooms for entertaining, multiple bedrooms, kitchens, and dining areas. They also hold a lot of history, and when preserved properly, it acts as a snapshot in time. I've visited this particular mansion several times in the past, both with friends and alone. So, on a chilly February weekend, I decided to pay another visit to the Breakers Newport, but with a little twist. Apart from the regular tour, I also booked a "Beneath The Breakers tour" that explores the underground operations that kept The Breakers running throughout the year, even though it was originally a summer home for the Vanderbilts.

Start with the Beneath the Breakers Newport Underground Tunnels Tour

I started my tour here, by joining the underground boiler room tour at 10:30am. These tunnels, made of brick and steel, are located 10 feet below ground level. We began our journey by going down the stairs to the boiler room, where we watched a short video. Our tour guide, Raymond, who is a Navy and Vietnam war veteran, explained everything in a way that everyone could easily understand. He stressed the importance of the underground's "guts and glory" for the house's "glitz and glamour." It was a well-spoken and undeniable truth. We explored the areas where coal was stored to fuel the boilers, and Raymond explained how the heaters kept The Breakers warm during winter. The mansion, which spans over 100,000 square feet, has numerous rooms that are heated by warm air channeled through gravity, without the need for fans.

As we pressed forward, we journeyed through the extensive brick tunnel. Above us, the view was filled with pipes and lights. Adorning the walls were enormous photographs that chronicled the reconstruction of The Breakers at different stages. This tunnel and the area beneath it played a vital part in the restoration of The Breakers following a devastating fire in 1893. Remarkably, the fully renovated Breakers that stands before us today was finished in 1898, despite the fact that it took just two years to rebuild the entire mansion.

This tour was incredibly captivating. It provided a fascinating glimpse into the inner workings of a summer residence that operates throughout all four seasons. Despite being located in Newport, a coastal area, the winters here can be quite challenging with cold weather and snow. Therefore, it's crucial to ensure the mansion remains functional year-round. The dedicated staff is based there throughout the year, each with their own important tasks. It's quite amusing how a mansion can resemble an office building or factory. I thoroughly enjoyed this tour and highly recommend it. The tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable and allowed the audience to fully absorb the experience. This tour lasted 90 minutes and was well worth it.

Complete a Self-Guided Tour of The Breakers

After the underground tunnels tour completed, I moved over to The Breakers for a self guided tour. I don’t believe they do guided tours anymore, logistically with the sheer number of people that visit year round, I don’t think it’s possible. For the self guided tour, you can download an app (search for Newport Mansions) and follow along with your earbuds on as you move through the mansion. As previously mentioned, this was not my first time here. However, every time I visit this mansion, I’m reminded of the grand architecture. The large rooms where every piece of the wall and ceiling is a piece of art in of itself, the Greek and Roman statutes that adorn the walls, the European Art that acts as the centerpiece of the room. It is very cultured, at least on the bottom floor. The bottom floor features The Grand Room, which is always a breathtaking sight, the billiard hall, dining hall and a music hall, among others. All are absolutely stunning to view.

Be that as it may, I actually found the top floor far more intriguing. I couldn't help but notice that the rooms were not as extravagant as the ones below. Walking through various bedrooms, servant’s quarters, bathrooms, and spacious closets was quite fascinating. The bathrooms stood out with their 4-faucet bathtubs, supplied with both freshwater and saltwater from the nearby Atlantic Ocean. Contrasts between the living conditions of the extended family and the servants’ families were evident in the mansion. The bedrooms were grand and spacious, painted in a more subtle manner compared to the overwhelming decor downstairs. Being someone who grew up working in foodservice kitchens, I was particularly interested in the kitchen area on the ground floor, complete with a cast iron stove, pots and pans, an ice room, and a two-floor supply room.

If you're interested in touring the mansion, or doing the underground tour, the best place to start is at the Newport Mansions website, as it will advise you which of the mansions are open for tours and offers numerous ticket packages for whichever tour you are looking for.

Is the Breakers Newport Worth a Visit?

The Breakers is just one of the five mansions in the area that belongs to the Preservation Society of Newport and stays open all year round. The other mansions are only open seasonally, but Marble House had recently opened when I visited this mansion in mid-February. Newport has so many amazing places to explore, and this is definitely one of them. During the Beneath the Breakers tour, I discovered a whole new side to this mansion and learned that The Breakers Newport is the fourth biggest attraction in all of New England, and the biggest one in Rhode Island. Only three attractions in Boston surpass it! Normally, I would come here in the spring, summer, or fall when the weather is nicer. However, it seems like the word has gotten out, and the number of visitors has skyrocketed since then, and rightfully so. This mansion and its tour never fail to impress, and you always walk away with new knowledge. With the Cliff Walk nearby and other mansions in the vicinity, this is the perfect place to start or end your day in Newport, Rhode Island.

I find mansions to be incredibly fascinating. While Europe has legendary castles, America is adorned with mansions that have stood the test of time. Not all mansions are constructed in the same manner; they are tailored to the preferences of their individual owners. It could be the Hermitage in Nashville, or the Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park, NY, and even within the same vicinity - the Breakers in Newport, Rhode Island. These structures symbolize the opulence of the Gilded Age, reflecting a romanticized image of upper-class wealth in America during a period of transition from the Civil War to the 20th century. Nevertheless, I perceive mansions as both artistic creations and efficient designs from an era before air conditioning. Many of these grand homes were constructed using the technology available at the time, with significant consideration given to airflow and the overall construction of the mansion and its grounds. For instance, Marble House was one of the many residences of the Vanderbilt family, specifically built for Alva Vanderbilt, the wife of William Vanderbilt, as a gift to her. This remarkable structure was crafted from 500,000 cubic feet of marble, constructed between 1888 and 1892, featuring 50 rooms, and is regarded as a 'summer cottage.' Let's take a brief trip in time to the Gilded Age, and explore this amazing architectural gem.

What is the Marble House?

The Marble House is among the numerous mansions in Newport, Rhode Island, dating back to the 19th century, constructed as summer residences for the affluent during the Gilded Age.

Rising on Bellevue Avenue, Marble House was designed by Richard Morris Hunt and inspired by the Petit Trianon at Versailles. Construction from 1888 to 1892 consumed some 500,000 cubic feet of imported marble and an estimated $11 million, roughly $385 million in 2025 dollars, making it the costliest American home of its day. French decorator Jules Allard & Sons outfitted 50 rooms with boiseries, gilt bronze, and painted ceilings, while landscape architect Ernest W. Bowditch shaped the formal grounds. After divorcing William Kissam Vanderbilt in 1895, Alva retained sole title to Marble House and later used its Chinese Tea House terrace as a stage for women’s suffrage rallies.

Entering The Mansion and Traveling Back to the Gilded Age

As you step onto the grounds, you'll be greeted by the meticulously maintained lawns and gardens, along with a beautifully restored facade. The Marble House stands out from other mansions in Newport, as you typically enter through the front door. This subtle detail creates an ambiance that makes you feel as though you are being welcomed into a grand mansion. Before you begin your exploration (and since time travel may in fact prevent this), download the Newport Mansions app on your phone before walking in, put in your earbuds, and start the self-guided tour as you walk in. It's an excellent way to enjoy the tour while also capturing some photos along the way. The audio for the self-guided tour is included in the admission fee, allowing you to proceed at your own leisure.

The tour kicks off in the dining room, where the term "grand" immediately springs to mind. Constructed from red marble, it boasts a wall that mirrors another wall in the space. It's quite misleading! If you're a fan of the HBO series The Gilded Age, you'll recognize that a scene from season two was shot here, and it's easy to see why! Alva Vanderbilt would converse with her children in French, and wine was served alongside meals - even for the kids.

You will observe that the hallways are encased in luxurious gold Italian marble, which imparts a distinct cooling sensation. On this warm day, as you stroll through, it becomes clear why this material was chosen; marble not only cools the air but also feels refreshing to the touch. Additionally, it serves as a reminder that these grand mansions were constructed long before the widespread use of air conditioning, a convenience we often overlook today.

The Gothic Room exudes a dark and atmospheric vibe, instantly enveloping you as you enter. This space showcases the gothic collection of Émile Gavet, serving as Alva Vanderbilt's private art collection. Every element in this room is imported, including the very floor beneath your feet. Additionally, the Grand Salon boasts gold-plated walls and was the venue for numerous parties and balls held in this magnificent setting.

What Goes Up the Mansion Must Come Down

Ascending to the bedrooms of Mr. and Mrs. Vanderbilt reveals a striking contrast. Mr. Vanderbilt's bedroom is modest and relatively small, whereas Mrs. Vanderbilt's bedroom boasts a grand scale and lavish decorations. Alva's daughter, Consuelo, has a bedroom that is, quite frankly, very red! Alva orchestrated all of this design with little to no input from her daughter, which resulted in some feelings of resentment.

The tour ultimately descends to the basement for the last stop - this is where you'll find the service entrance and the scullery. In the scullery, dishes were cleaned in a soapstone sink using rainwater that was collected and heated in a nearby cast iron cask. To conclude the tour, you’ll be shown the expansive kitchen featuring a cast iron stove that consumed 30 tons of coal annually. This kitchen was manned by a team of chefs and overseen by the esteemed French chef, Chef Ramo, who received a generous salary for his experience.

When I think of castles, I generally think of the numerous castles that are still standing, and some in ruins, in places like France, Scotland and Spain. These glorious structures date back to medieval times and were primarily built for defense, serving as fortified residences for nobility but also as a means to exert control over the surrounding lands. The process often began with careful site selection, often on elevated ground or near water sources, to enhance both visibility and accessibility. Skilled craftsmen and laborers employed a variety of materials, including stone, timber, and earth, to create thick walls, towers, and moats that would withstand sieges and attacks. The design of castles would evolve over the centuries, incorporating features such as arrow slits, drawbridges, and fortified gates, which not only provided security but also showcased the power and wealth of their owners. In America, our take on castles is the many mansions that were inspired by the concept of castles. However, not all castles were built for warfare and opulence; one notable castle was commissioned by an actor as a gift for his wife and has since become one of Connecticut's most remarkable State Parks. In this post, i'll take you on a tour to experience the extensive and beautiful Gillette Castle State Park.

Making A Grand Entrance: The First and Second Floors

Now known as Gillette Castle State Park, this site was initially designed to resemble a castle, although it was commonly called the 'Seventh Sister'. It was commissioned by William Gillette, an actor renowned for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes, and who significantly influenced the evolution of modern acting, moving from melodrama to the realism evident in today's performances.

Built between 1914 through 1919, this 184-acre castle estate nestled along the Connecticut River was originally called "Seventh Sister Castle" by Gillette and those who knew him. The name came from the castle estate's location upon the Seventh Sister, a series of seven hills along the East bank of the river.
A man of many talents and full of creative flair, Gillette designed and oversaw the construction of the castle and also created many of the adornments that can be found within. Wooden light switches, roll-away tables, crafty mirrors, and even secret passageways all designed by Gillette make the home truly into a medieval-style castle from the Old World.
Designed in a medieval gothic architectural style, the outer facade of the structure uses local Connecticut field stone. Several beautiful field stone structures also dot the premises, including the Grand Central Station

Upon entering, you are greeted by a dim and atmospheric setting that defines the castle's character. This was a deliberate choice. Built over five years with steel I-beams, the castle's walls were constructed around these supports. The front door and its mechanisms, including the switches, are made entirely of wood. Unlike traditional castles, this one features modern amenities such as electricity and heating, with warmth flowing through the stone walls. As you ascend the stairs, you'll find his workshop to your left, and directly in front of you, a series of switches that control the 'secret passage.' This concealed staircase is adjacent to the entrance where Mr. Gillette would greet guests on the ground floor, allowing them to leave their steamer trunks in the alcove. While they were briefly distracted, he would 'mysteriously appear' on the second floor, much to their delight.

As you ascend the stairs, you will encounter "The Great Room," which served as Mr. Gillette's "living room." This space was designed for entertaining guests, featuring a card table and a unique "cat castle" where Mr. and Mrs. Gillette's beloved cats enjoyed their very own wooden "castle." Since the couple did not have children, their cats became their cherished "children," living lives of luxury (or perhaps nine lives!). Continuing your journey through this second level past The Great Room, you will come across a quaint greenhouse, followed by the butler's quarters and kitchen area, which boasts a dining room table on tracks for easy movement. I previously mentioned the basement workshop located to the left as you ascend the stairway to enter the castle. Mr. Gillette, a notably tall man, had a second-floor office that includes a "stairway to nowhere," designed to conceal the square hole in the ceiling created by his 6-foot-3-inch height, which would otherwise hinder his ability to work in the basement workshop. A hole in the wall was constructed to allow him to stand and work comfortably, while that "stairway to nowhere" on the opposite end provided the necessary access for him to do so.

Top of the Rock: Third Floor and the Top Level

The third floor contains a series of bedrooms and spare rooms, and as you head upstairs to see the rooms on the third floor, you’ll notice the hallway is quite thin and will likely fit one person as they walk through.

Each bedroom is depicted in a unique color, beginning with the Green bedroom, which belonged to Mr. Gillette’s niece. Since Mr. and Mrs. Gillette did not have any children (unless you consider their 14-17 cats as kids!), Mr. Gillette shared a strong bond with his niece, Margaret Warner, who often visited the castle. As an uncle to my own nieces, with whom I share a close relationship, I connected on a personal level to this anecdote.

Next to the Green bedroom was the Blue bedroom, intended for overnight guests. This bright corner room was designed to host extended family members as well as young actors and actresses who needed a place to stay while working with Mr. Gillette. It is also connected to a large bathroom, ensuring that guests had the privacy they needed.

The last stop was Mr. Gillette’s bedroom, a relatively small space that features a design theme consistent with the grand room below, adorned with wood and hand-drawn artwork on grass wall matting. With the constraints of space, Mr. Gillette maintained a high level of organization through cleverly concealed closets and swing-out drawers. Perhaps he also set a standard for efficient packing!

Additionally, there is an "observation deck" situated between the staircase and the balcony, equipped with mirrors that enabled Mr. Gillette to keep an eye on his guests in the great room. As illustrated in the photos, the view is quite impressive.

On the uppermost floor, you will find Mr. Gillette's art collection, which includes artistic depictions of his stage performances, his letters to other actors displayed in glass cases, and an extensive library. If you are a carpenter or know someone passionate about woodworking, they will be in awe of this location and the craftsmanship involved in its construction.

Walking the Gillette Castle Grounds and It Once Had A Railroad!

After completing the tour, you will exit out to a pavilion, and walk further and you will see a gorgeous view of the Connecticut River. Personally, I enjoy standing and looking out at the river as it is incredibly serene and peaceful.

If you choose to bring lunch to the park with you, there is a pavilion area adjacent to the castle where there are four picnic tables. While it won’t shield you from rain and is not safe during thunderstorms, it does provide some respite from the sun and walking through, I noticed it was slightly cooler than the outside. Also, if you notice on top of the entrance, you’ll see two cat statues looking down at you.

The state park features a variety of hiking trails, with one trail standing out as it follows a 3-mile stretch of a former train line where Mr. Gillette operated both a steam and an electric train on this narrow gauge track. Mr. Gillette had a passion for trains and maintained scrapbooks filled with pictures and stories about them. The train tracks originated at "Grand Central Station" located on the property, winding around the double gates, with the endpoint being "125th Street Station," which served as an observation platform overlooking the Connecticut River. If these names ring a bell, it's because these "train stations" were inspired by actual train stations in New York City. Ever the showman, Mr. Gillette designed the electric trains to mimic steam trains, and the track featured tunnels, wooden trusses, bridges, and observation platforms. One of the restored electric trains is currently on display at the visitor center.

What Makes This Food Tour "Politically Incorrect"?

I booked this walking food tour on an early summer Friday at around 2:30pm. The ticket instructed us to meet at the North End Branch of the Boston Public Library. However, since the tour operates independently of the library, the actual meeting point is outside in the alcove at the front of the library. This area is shaded, providing a pleasant respite from the summer sun. There are no signs to guide you, and the tour may start a bit late. From my conversation with another attendee who had been on this tour before, I learned that this is quite common. When you notice a small group gathering in the alcove, that’s your cue that the tour is assembling there. After about 15 minutes, an older Italian-American man arrives. His name is Anthony Gesualdi and he's about as old school as it gets. With slicked-back graying hair and a reddish complexion, he shows up holding an unlit cigarette and wearing a black t-shirt that humorously lists the “requirements” (I found the list amusing, as it mostly covered general tour etiquette). Anthony used to own a restaurant but has shifted to conducting tours in his later years. After introducing himself and openly expressing his frustrations with Viator, he began to share the history and transformations of the North End of Boston, which was once a vibrant Italian neighborhood but has undergone significant gentrification, much to the dismay of long-time residents. On a personal note, I must admit it felt a bit surreal for me because Anthony bore a striking resemblance to my cherished paternal grandfather, both in appearance and demeanor, whom I lost unexpectedly when I was just 12 years old.

What You Will Experience on the Politically Incorrect North End Food Tour?

After learning about the history of the North End, we moved on to the walking food tour. All of the food shown below is included in the tour price. I took plenty of pictures of the food, and that will tell the story! Needless to say, it's a lot of walking in a small area, so wear some comfortable shoes!

Our first stop was just down the street at Polcari's Coffee for some fantastic Italian ice.

Our next stop was Monica’s Mercato Grocery for sandwiches. We had an excellent Italian sub with fresh thin sliced cold cuts, balsamic vinegar and true fresh baked bread. Even my small sample size was quite filling!

In between the food, Anthony shared tales from his childhood in the North End, especially recalling a visit to 98 Prince Street, the location of the Boston Mob's headquarters, where the notorious gangster Whitey Bulger betrayed the Italian mob.

Our next stop was at L'Osteria Ristorante for a couple of raviolis, which feature pillowy soft ricotta and are served in a bolognese sauce. Really tasty, especially when paired with a glass of Chianti (for a little extra cost). Sadly, I don't have a food pic for this one. I loved it, so trust me on this!

Monica’s Pasta Shop was the next move where we had some really well made arancini. Absolutely delicious!

Quattro featured amazing brick oven pizza, with that coal char on the crust, and we had slices of a white pie, that had that crust that’s both chewy and crunchy.

In the end, we explored a few additional spots to savor dessert-focused dishes, wrapping up our meal with espresso gelato that reminded me of an 'espresso float.' While I'm usually not a fan of desserts, I truly appreciated this as our final stop!

Should You Take This Tour?

Overall, the tour was great. Mr. Gesualdi is a character and is a very nice man, but also a man set in his ways. He’s crude as well, when he walked us over to our first stop at Polcari's, he knocked on the window and waved his middle finger to the owner. Of which the owner of Polcari's did the same. I thought it was hilarious and it’s meant to be funny, so definitely have a sense of humor and you’ll get along just fine. Also, he uses very colorful language, so again, know what you’re getting into. With that being said, he’s very gregarious, talks with his hands and his arms and is a real authentic Italian-American guy. You’ll get long talks and stories about the neighborhood and you’ll get the history of the North End of Boston. He also made an excellent point that many of these tour companies are staffed with college students who aren’t from the neighborhood and are utilizing a script. He mentioned many of these tour companies are corporations. It’s a great point, and it’s why it’s important to do your research. With Anthony, as crude as he is, you’re still getting an authentic experience, and it’s well worth it - even if it might make you a little uncomfortable.
